Is Dr. Kapoor Leaving New Amsterdam?

The new season of the New Amsterdam premiere took us back to the COVID 19 pandemic. The heartbreaking episode showed how members of the team dealt with the crisis and some of the doctors were a great deal more fortunate than others. Dr. Vijay developed heart problems after contracting the virus. Is Anupam Kher leaving New Amsterdam and his role as Dr. Vijay Kapoor after being a long-term part of the show?

The showrunner of New Amsterdam, David Schulner has told TV Line that the “New Normal” reviews footage originally shot for an episode in Season 2, where Dr. Kapoor was supposed to be taken ill with the influenza virus. It showed in David’s comment that Anupam has missed at least some days of shooting and to crown it all up, he is only credited in one episode of Season 3.

Anupam’s character was not a prominent part of the new episode as he is away on recovery due to heart problems from COVID 19 complications.

There has been no talk about his possible departure from the show but signs are showing that he might be about to leave the show. According to The Hindu, Anupam left New York for Mumbai, India in March 2020, it is uncertain if the actor would be staying in India or is making plans to return to the U.S anytime soon.

The Indian actor told The Hindu that he had started journaling to cope with the sense of downfall that came with the early days of the COVID 19 pandemic. His notes form the basis of his book, Your Best Day Is Today! He also got to know that his mother had contracted COVID 19 and his experience most likely made it to the book.

The upcoming book is not the only project keeping the actor busy over the past couple of months. According to his IMDb page, he is to appear in several movies which include; The Last show, Zamaanat, Sooryavanshi, Alert 24X7, and Kashmir Files. He also provided the voiceover for the Principal’s character in Koochie Koochie Hota Hai, an animation directed by Tarun Mansukhani.

He is also to appear in Snapshot Wedding and Miss match India.

New Amsterdam – Would Anupam Be Returning To New Amsterdam?

The rather obvious question is will Dr. Kapoor be returning to New Amsterdam? Although with all the upcoming works keeping him busy it is uncertain if he would be returning to New Amsterdam, his IMDb page gives hints that he might be departing the show anytime soon.

Although Dr. Max Goodwin has the impression that Dr. Vijay Kapoor would be back, the staff are working hard to keep the hospital going strong without him.

However, there has been no public word that Anupam would be leaving the show but it is hoped that he would return soon, even though New Amsterdam is a show that temporarily moves actors based on what is happening in their characters’ lives. Just as it happened with Floyd Reynolds, who was gone temporarily and is still trying to regain his stand in the hospital.

We hope to see Dr. Kapoor back in New Amsterdam with new important stories that would put the character in the front and center. However, the transition back into full-time will come with its fair share of challenges with everything that has happened.
