Markle Markle and Prince Harry inked a deal on a partnership with Proctor & Gamble. As manufacturer of the Olay skin lightening beauty creams, Proctor & Gamble repeatedly has faced allegations of racism.

With Meghan repeatedly championing anti-racism causes, the decision to partner with a manufacturer of a skin-whitening cream has resulted in slams for the couple. Anti-racism champions have urged that Olay remove those products from their lines. Their argument: Selling a skin-lightening cream implies that darker skin needs to be lighter to be somehow more attractive.

Ironically, Markle’s and Harry’s move and the resulting backlash follow her Oprah Winfrey interview claim that someone in the royal family made a racist statement. That statement, according to Meghan, questioned whether her then-unborn child would have dark skin.

The situation in which Meghan and Harry have landed is like a mirror image of what Keeping Up With The Kardashians (KUWTK) stars Kim Kardashian and Kylie Jenner have faced in the past. 

For years, Kim Kardashian has shared ads for various weight-loss products on her social media. As a result, Kim has repeatedly come under fire for influencing her young followers to think that only slim bodies are positive.

For example, Kardashian has promoted a product known as Fit Tea on her Instagram.

“Detoxing with @fittea. It tastes amazing and the ingredients are all natural,” Kim has written as part of her partnership. 

And Kardashian isn’t the only member of the KUWTK clan to hype these weight loss products… and get bashed accordingly. Like Kim, Kylie Jenner has promoted detox teas, boasting about her weight loss using the products. 

The situation in which Meghan and Harry now find themselves is a parallel of what Kim and Kylie have discovered: Yes, celebrities can make money inking partnerships with mega-sized corporations. But is the price they pay in a backlash over their sponsorship worth the money? We think Queen Elizabeth might enjoy answering that question… if Harry dares to ask his royal grandmother for the advice!
