The whole title business can be confusing for the public and awkwardness can arise when then royals meet citizens at official events. Such a happenstance occurred recently when the Cambridge’s visited Wales to mark St. David’s Day. There they met with Nicky Hurst of Country Fare Wholefoods and Fine Cheeses, who accidentally addressed pair a bit too casually!

According to Woman’s Day, “Per royal protocol when addressing the royals, one is expected to refer to them as ‘your Royal Highness’, ‘Sir’ or ‘Ma’am’.

But when the Cambridges, “stopped by the cheese stand at popular Abergavenny Market on Tuesday, Hurst referred to them simply as ‘Kate’ and ‘Will.’”

Hurst later told People, “I wasn’t sure what they’d be like and what to call them in terms of their titles.” Luckily the casual couple, “were really relaxed,” and not at all fussy about the introduction.

Hurst added that the pair were lovely: “They’re so down-to-earth, an amazing couple. They will make a fantastic King and Queen — and Prince and Princess of Wales.”
