If you thought Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt ‘s divorce was messy, you should really educate yourself on the Johnny Depp and Amber Heard lawsuit. Granted that Jolie and Pitt’s was a bit more complicated because there were children involved, it still does not hold a torch to Depp and Heard’s.
After the six-week-long battle that saw the former lovers rip into each other in court, with the eyes of the world watching, and a few days of Heard and her team attempting to dismiss the verdict, it seems Heard has decided she’s brave enough to reincarnate the struggle by appealing the case.
Amber Heard Appeals Verdict, With Johnny Depp Following Suit
Talk about some warring exes. Hours after Amber Heard gave formal notice of her intent to appeal the verdict in Depp’s defamation trial against her, the “Pirates of the Caribbean” star launched his own countermove.
The paperwork, filed on Friday by Depp in Fairfax County, Virginia, read: “Plaintiff and counterclaim-defendant John C Depp II, by counsel, hereby appeals to the court of appeals of Virginia from all adverse rulings and from the final judgment order of this circuit court entered on June 24, 2022.”
Depp’s appeal is meant to be a two-edged thing, because it counters Amber’s appeal, but most importantly, it could take away Amber’s $2 million verdict, which she won by saying that she was defamed when a member of Depp’s team called her a liar for claiming Depp sexually assaulted her.
The Jury came to A Unanimous Ruling
On June 1, the seven-panel jury came to a nearly unanimous ruling, handing Depp approximately $15 million in damages. The money was cut down to $10 million by Judge Penny Azcarate due to a Virginia law capping punitive damages.
“This was an overwhelmingly positive verdict for Mr. Depp,” a source close to Depp’s musical partner Jeff Beck told Deadline on Friday, less than 24 hours after Heard filed for the appeal she’s been bleating about since the verdict.
“The verdict speaks for itself, and Mr. Depp believes that this is a time for both parties to move on with their lives and heal,” the source added. “But if Ms. Heard is determined to pursue further litigation by appealing the verdict, Mr. Depp is filing a concurrent appeal to ensure that the full record and all relevant legal issues are considered by the Court of Appeal.”
Heard’s camp has been silent since filing the motion on Thursday.
