The “Stuck On You” singer Lionel Richie who would be performing together with some other elite singers at King Richard III’s Coronation next month May 6 has got some interesting advice on how to navigate royal protocols.
Speaking with E! News’ Chief Correspondent Keltie Knight on Monday, April 17, the “All Night Long” crooner said, “There’s always something where I go, ‘Oh, I didn’t know that.'”
According to Richie, all you need to do is use the right words to accord respect. “Be prepared, just be sure to just say sir and ma’am—forget everything else. Just remember sir and ma’am, and you kind of walk your way through.”
Lionel Richie — Richie’s Reaction To Being Picked To Perform At The King’s Coronation
Richie finally got the answer to his question, “Hello, is it me you’re looking for?” Early last week after he was among the selected few to perform at the King’s coronation.
During the Breakthrough Awards which took place at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles last week Saturday, the 73-year-old singer described his excitement as such “an honor” with PEOPLE.
Richie said, “I mean, you don’t get in the business and say, ‘You know what? I’ll be at the King’s coronation.’ You know, that just never comes up, [It’s] A, a surprise. B, what an honor. And C, the fact of all the names that are out there that he could have had for this, he called my name.”
Richie also revealed that King Charles requested him to perform a particular track on that day but he wouldn’t be revealing which track it is until the appointed day. “And the answer is yes, I will do it. We will not reveal because it’s completely enveloped in secrecy. So, all I can tell you is I’m very happy to be there.”
As for what his wardrobe would be like for the occasion, Richie said, “I don’t even know what we’re going to finalize. All I know is we’ve got this wonderful invitation. I’m pulling from everywhere.”
Lionel Richie — Richie’s Thoughts On King Charles’ Reign
Richie revealed that he and King Charles go way back, and watching him move from a prince to a King is a good thing. “I’m very happy for him. He’s kind of waited in that second position for a very long time.”
He continued, “And I think what we’re gonna get now is the new version of the royal family. I’m looking forward to see what he’s going to bring to the table, and I can tell you right now, he’s gonna change it up a little bit.”
Richie also shared what he’s looking forward to the most, “Come on. Are you kidding me?” he said. “I want to see the pomp and circumstance because I don’t care what you thought Michael Jackson did. I don’t care what you thought Prince did.”
He concluded, “I don’t care what you thought Madonna did. Nothing’s going to be like this. This is the grandiose of grandiose right here.”
