Biggest Loser Reboot Addresses ‘Fat Shaming’ Concerns

Biggest Loser Reboot Addresses 'Fat Shaming' Concerns“The Biggest Loser” reboot not only promises to offer improved programs for the contestants but also better packages after their stint on the show has ended to make sure that they continue their weight loss journey. However, the show has been called out for “fat-shaming” in its past. It’s also been criticized for setting up unrealistic expectations for those who wish to lose weight.

Bob Harper Speaks Out

Former trainer and host Bob Harper immediately went to the rescue and defended the show. He revealed that he’s worked with several people who have been inspired by the show. He emphasized that the show was developed to serve to inspire people instead of treating it as a how-to guide for weight loss.

USA Defends The Biggest Loser Reboot

USA executive Heather Olander said the show doesn’t air everything that happens on set. For instance, there are nutritionists on the set who write meal plans for every contestant.

“We had two doctors onset and a set of trainers that vetted all of the challenges and the workouts that they did and to make sure they were constantly monitored, to make sure all of their vitals were where they needed to be and that they were losing weight at a healthy rate,” she added.

It was also revealed that adjustments were made for every contestant. Factors were considered including their caloric intake, workout program, and other measured metrics to make sure that all contestants are working at a healthy and safe level.

A More Robust After Show Treatment Plan

The program also promised to provide contestants, including those who have been eliminated early, a more robust after show treatment plan. This includes a gym membership, nutritionist, and help in finding a support group to make sure that they stay on track with their personalized goals.

Olander said the show wants to make sure that even if they don’t win, every contestant will have a shot at having and living a healthier life.

Adapt To The Changes

NBC’s “The Biggest Loser” ran from 2004 to 2016 for 17 seasons and it has earned excellent ratings since its debut. But the show had to make some changes to their program so that it’ll be in line with today’s views on body positivity, fat-shaming, physical and mental issues.

“The Biggest Loser” is ready to take on all these new challenges thanks to its smarter, safer and more improved program. One of the reboot’s focus is on getting healthy and setting every contestant to a healthy path.
