Hollywood 2023 Writers Strike Ends: WGA Achieves Unanimous Vote

The 2023 Hollywood Writers Strike has ended. And after months of striking, the Writers Guild of America (WGA) revealed its new deal.

Writers Guild Votes Unanimously To End Strike

For Hollywood’s writers, the time at last has come to move from the picket line back into the studios. And the Writers Guild of America (WGA) announced that after months, the organization “reached a tentative agreement with the AMPTP,” reported People.

“Today, our Negotiating Committee, WGAW Board, and WGAE Council all voted unanimously to recommend the agreement,” added the WGA. ” The strike ends at 12:01 am PT. Check out our deal at wgacontract2023.org/deal. #WGAStrong,” read the statement on social media.

And that means that writers will receive a minimum pay increase of five percent, with more increases planned in both 2024 and 2025. The agreement with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) impacts Netflix, Amazon, Apple, Disney, Warner Bros. Discovery, NBC Universal, Paramount and Sony. 

New Writers Contract Impacts Film And TV Projects

However, writers still must ratify the contract. But the announcement means that they can head back to work. And the new deal will last from Sept. 25 through May 1, 2026.

Included in the contract are “increased foreign streaming residuals, viewership-based streaming bonuses,” and a plan to increase “most Minimum Basic Agreements (MBA) minimums by 5%.” The deal also allows for “pension and health contributions up to the relevant cap.”

As a result of the unanimous vote, late-night talk shows can end their hiatus. TV talk shows impacted included The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel Live, Late Night with Seth Myers and The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, all of which turned to reruns during the hiatus.

Actors’ Strike Continues

However, the Screen Actors Guild and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists union (SAG-AFTRA) strike continues to impact Hollywood. And the union failed to achieve an agreement amid contract negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. That strike started in mid-July.

And Fran Drescher, the SAG-AFTRA president, spoke out for actors. “We are the victims here. We are being victimized by a very greedy entity. I am shocked by the way that the people we have been in business with are treating us,” asserted Drescher in a press conference after SAG-AFTRA agreed to go on strike. And she admitted, “I cannot believe it, quite frankly, how far apart we are on so many things.”
