Meghan Markle is making a major step before she enters the world of politics. The Duchess of Sussex, who is rumored about supposedly wanting to dip her toes into California politics, is being told that she needs to drop her royal title before she does it.

And it looks like she might finally be listening to the people around her who have been saying it all along. Here’s what you need to know.

Former BBC commentator Jennie Bond says that being a royal simply hasn’t worked out for Meghan and neither has being a celebrity or an actress for that matter. That’s why she’s wanting to be a politician instead.

Before that happens, she needs to drop her Duchess of Sussex title. That’s because there’s no way that she can be a royal duchess and an American princess at the same time as it’s against royal protocol. That, and it’s against good taste, too. 

Speaking to OK! Magazine in a new interview, Bond says, “This is exactly where Meghan should be heading. She needs to drop her title, or at least just not use it at all, and make a mark on the political scene. I have always admired the fact that she is a strong, independent, campaigning woman.”

Bond continued, “She has given up the Royal platform, which obviously brings global interest, and both she and Harry seem to be struggling somewhat to work out whether they are Hollywood celebrities or just nonworking Royals. This would give Meghan her own clear identity.”

Now, whether or not Meghan Markle does end up running for political office remains to be seen, but there’s some people out there who say she’s even thinking about becoming president of the United States.
