Derek Sherman and Katie Conrad initially seemed like one of the most promising couples on the Lifetime show but things are more complicated than that.
Of all the couples on season 10 of Married at First Sight, Derek Sherman and Katie Conrad seemed to be the best match of them all. However, Derek has since admitted it could take up to a year for him to actually “feel love” for Katie.
Married at First Sight Spoilers: Instant attraction between Derek Sherman and Katie Conrad
On their honeymoon in Panama, Derek, 26, and Katie, 25, seemed to have an instant attraction and appeared to thoroughly enjoy themselves. Both of them are grad students and both are curious and adventurous and appear open to possibilities with each other.
However, things got a bit more complicated on the February 12 episode of New Wife, New Life. While in a counseling session with Pastor Cal, Katie ‘fessed up that she still had feelings for her ex. She said those feelings made her second guess her upcoming wedding.
Now both Katie and Derek say they are now past the honeymoon phase of their relationship, and while they seemed to be in love on their honeymoon, they are more serious and somber now. When Pastor Cal asked how their marriage was going, neither Katie nor Derek looked too enthusiastic.
Katie hesitantly said she thought it has been good, while looking at Derek for approval. He agreed the marriage has been good so far, but it is “definitely a transition.” They both said reality was now setting in. Katie said they are attracted to each other, which is good, and that they are getting along and enjoying good conversations.
Derek said that, “all things considered” they are doing well, but admitted they are somewhat “stagnant” when it comes to romance. Derek believes there is something missing from their relationship, but says they have made progress.
Married at First Sight 2020 Spoilers: Derek feels like he and Katie are roommates
When Pastor Cal asked Derek if they feel like they are roommates, Derek said, “A little bit,” which seemed to hurt Katie. She immediately jumped in, saying she knows he does, but stressed that she is his wife, not his roommate.
According to Katie, who is a romantic, their connection feels very much on the surface right now. She said Derek’s lack of passion was making her feel concerned. Derek said he realized the main thing missing in their relationship now is time. He said he wants to work it out and he is going to do all he can to make that happen.
Derek then hurt Katie’s feelings by saying he doesn’t believe he could feel love for her for at least six months to one year.
Katie admitted how much Derek had hurt her feelings and made her worry over their future together. She said it scares her that Derek doesn’t know if he is willing to fall in love with her. She said she got “married at first sight to fall in love and be in love.” She said if it gets to the point where their relationship is not progressing, she will not want to move forward.
Derek said while he can’t say he is in love, he does definitely want to develop those feelings for Katie, but only time will tell.
Pastor Cal then told the couple to be patient and rather than focusing on falling in love, they should focus on “growing” in love, which he said would give Katie and Derek more control and build a stronger foundation for their marriage.
