Royal pundit Ingrid Seward told The Mirror that she thinks the milestone birthday was a moment that the senior royals decided deserved recognition. But she doesn’t think that Prince William willingly extended a greeting: “Even Prince William wished his brother ‘Happy Birthday’–even if it was through clenched teeth.”

Does she see the surprise move as a way forward for the warring princes? Not really. She said that William doesn’t trust Harry, but took the high road: “he wished him the best on his milestone birthday.” In other words William, as future king, acted in the best interest of the Crown.

Seward also weighed in on King Charles’ motivation for sending a public note to his traitor son. According to her, “King Charles would have celebrated his son’s 40th from a distance. Whatever upsets Harry has caused would have been forgotten for the day.”

Perhaps the gesture shouldn’t have been such a surprise. Prior to Harry’s big day, a source told the Daily Express that King Charles “will reach out to Harry on his birthday.

Although the family are not as close as they once were, there is still a lot of love there. They tend to use Skype when they communicate because they can see each other and it’s all set up by staff so it runs smoothly.”
