Tom Cruise, (62) hit the movie scene with Risky Business in 1983 and later he did well, becoming a household name for Top Gun and Mission Impossible. Recently, he won a U.S. Navy Award, but some people dissed him. Read on to find out why.

Heartthrob is not a word often used in 2025, but that’s exactly what the young actor became in the 1980s. A very handsome young man, his fans would scream with joy if they saw him anywhere in person. The famous face married three times, and he became very prominent in the Church of Scientology.

Tom Cruise also did a lot of work with the U.S. Navy. Actually, his movies inspired people to sign up for the Marines as well. So, he was made an Honorary Naval Aviator. Of course, he also continued making movies and appeared again as Ethan Hunt in Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning.

Tom Cruise Gets U.S. Navy Award

On December 17, the U.S. Navy put out a press statement about a special award for the actor. In part, it said:

Tom Cruise…was awarded the Department of the Navy Distinguished Public Service (DPS) Award for his dedication to the Navy. His efforts in the film industry have increased public awareness and appreciation for the Navy’s highly trained personnel and the sacrifices they make while in uniform. He was also recognized for his outstanding contributions to the Navy and Marine Corps. Awarded by Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro, the DPS Award is the highest honor the Secretary can bestow on a civilian outside the Department of the Navy…

The news about Tom Cruise soon made its way to Reddit where u/SatoruGojo232 shared a photo and said, “Tom Cruise receives the US Navy’s highest civilian honor.” A few people talked about his movies and his realistic acts on screen that attracted recruits to the Navy. But others dissed him.
