Glenn Close Shares How Robin Williams’ Advice Prepared Her for SNL

Glenn Close turned to a trusted friend for guidance before stepping into her first hosting role on Saturday Night Live (SNL).

Glenn Close, the iconic actress known for her unforgettable roles, shared a heartwarming story about the invaluable advice she received from her late friend, Robin Williams before her first stint hosting Saturday Night Live (SNL).

Seeking Words Of Wisdom From Robin Williams

Close, 77, recounted the moment while attending the 12th Annual Bring Change to Mind Revels & Revelations Gala. Speaking exclusively to PEOPLE, she revealed, “[I went to] Robin Williams, who was my friend,” adding that she sought his guidance as she prepared for the live comedy show.

“I said, ‘Do you have any advice about Saturday Night Live?’ And he said, ‘Just don’t do anything you don’t think is funny, because you get all these different fabulous ideas,'” Close recalled. The advice, given by the beloved actor and comedian, who tragically passed away in August 2014 at age 62, stayed with her and proved helpful during her SNL debut in February 1989.

Memorable Moments From SNL

Close hosted the episode alongside musical guest The Gipsy Kings, marking her first time in Studio 8H. Reflecting on the experience, she expressed her joy: “Oh, it was great fun.” The episode aired during the height of her fame, following the release of her thriller Fatal Attraction.

One standout sketch from the show humorously portrayed her character Alex Forrest attending a group therapy session—complete with her infamous knife and purse.

Three years later, Close returned to host the 1992 Christmas episode, featuring The Black Crowes as the musical guest. Both hosting gigs left her with fond memories and highlighted her versatility as a performer.

Keeping Up With Saturday Night Live

On weekends, Saturday Night Live airs on NBC and continues to enthrall viewers. On Sunday, February 16 at 8 p.m. ET, NBC and Peacock will present a special live broadcast called SNL50: The Anniversary Special as the legendary show gets closer to its historic 50th anniversary.

Robin Williams’ sage advice remains a testament to his brilliance, not only as a comedian but also as a supportive friend. For Close, his words provided the confidence to navigate the unpredictable and often exhilarating world of live comedy.
