The dangerous world of Alaskan crab fishing seems very real in Discovery’s Deadliest Catch. Sadly, the news recently arrived that a new fisherman on the show passed away at sea. Read on for more details.
Tragic Death In The Bering Sea
The accident happened on the Bering Sea. While fans know that sometimes the treacherous sea causes tragedies and sometimes, death, it’s always a shock. And this time, it seems sadder because the victim’s young.
According to E Times on YouTube, 25-year-old rookie deckhand Todd Meadows, 25, died following a “fishing-related incident.” Fans of the show hadn’t met him yet, and apparently the accident on February 25 happened when the crew of the F/V Aleutian Lady worked and filmed for upcoming scenes on Deadliest Catch.
A Well-Liked Crew Member
Captain Rick Shelford shared the news of the “most tragic” day in the ship’s history. Plus, he talked about how the younger man, Todd Meadows, quickly meshed with the crew, almost like a younger brother.
Notably, he seemed praiseworthy because of a “relentless work ethic” and a deep passion for the sea. Actually, that’s high praise, given that veteran fishermen often seem rather harsh with newbies.

The latest news adds to a growing list of losses that affected the crew and families of Deadliest Catch. Past seasons saw the passing of figures like Nick McGlashan and Mahlon Reyes. While it’s a reality show, the dangers are, in fact, very real.
A GoFundMe
In the wake of the accident, TMZ reported that a GoFundMe was set up for the children of Todd Meadows. Other news came from the family, and his grandma described him as “beloved by many.” Naturally, his loss goes hard on his family and on the fishing community.

In the meantime, while Discovery shared about the sad news, they stopped filming after the accident. Plus, an investigation into the death is ongoing.
Viewers React
Fans of the show felt saddened about Todd, and in the comments section on YouTube, they rallied around with prayers for the family and crew.
One of them wrote, “SO VERY sorry to his family, friends and crew members. RIP.”
Here are a few more responses from the discussion area:
- Condolences to his family and friends and all on the fishing vessel so tragic, prayers to everyone.
- condolances to his loved ones . the ocean … claimed another soul. “Luckily” they was able to get him out of sea but sorrily the outcame was devestating. Rip Todd. Fly high.
- I would hope the show itself will donate to his young kids future.
