Meryl Streep Says Melania Trump’s Style Is Redefining Power Dressing for Women

Meryl Streep Says Melania Trump’s Style Is Redefining Power Dressing for WomenMeryl Streep is seeing a problem, and she’s not afraid to call it out, regardless of what the world may think of the fence she fell in.

This year will see fans revisit Streep’s iconic Oscar-nominated ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ role, Miranda Priestly, for the first time since the original ran two decades ago.

To promote the movie, the fictional fashion goddess was paired with a real life fashion goddess, Vogue’s very own Anna Wintour, for a Vogue cover shoot. For the shoot, Wintour rocked a sweeping bright red gown, while Streep opted for a feminized power suit, which, if we’re being honest, is perfectly in line with her character’s fashion sense.

Getting Streep and Wintour in the same room is like a major thing for fashion, so of course, they’re going to get these two ladies talking. ‘Barbie’s’ Greta Gerwig was brought in as the moderator.

Meryl Streep Says Melania Trump’s Controversial 2018 Outfit Sent A “Powerful” Message

During their chat, Streep touched on the wider influence of fashion, as something that defines the roles that the genders play in society.

“I think the most… powerful message that our current first lady sent was in the coat that said ‘I Really Don’t Care, Do U?’ when she was going to see migrant children who were incarcerated,” Streep said of Melania Trump’s June 2018 outfit, adding, “All dress is about expressing yourself, but we’re also subject to larger historical and political sweeps of expectation.”

At the time, Melania had clarified the reason for the message. She told ABC that “it’s obvious I didn’t wear the jacket for the children, I wore the jacket to go on the plane and off the plane. It was for the people and for the left-wing media who are criticizing me. I want to show them I don’t care. You could criticize whatever you want to say. But it will not stop me to do what I feel is right.”

Meryl Streep Says Fashion Forces Women To Show Their “Smallness”

Streep also called out some of the disparities she observed in men and women’s fashion, and how that difference can be destabilizing.

She said: “I’m stunned at how women in power have to have bare arms on television while men are covered in shirts and ties or a suit. There’s an apology built into women. They have to show their smallness. It’s compensatory: The advancements of women in the second half of the 20th century and the beginning of this one have been destabilizing. It’s as if women have to say, ‘I’m little. I can’t walk in these shoes. I can’t run. I’m bare, not threatening.’”
