Apparently one cannot be King and a modern military man, too. According to one royal watcher, William, the Duke of Cambridge, had his dreams of a military career dashed by his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth.
Royal authority Simon Vigar went on the record in the documentary, William and Kate: Too Good to be True, attesting to William’s crushed dream.

Was William desperate to play a long-term role in the military? Vigar confirms that but says that Her Majesty forbids it, placing his responsibility to the throne as a higher priority. He went on to say that Prince William, “wasn’t allowed anywhere near the frontline,” because the “ultimate boss” said nay.
But all was not lost as Vigar added that Prince William was retrained and was then able to use his talents to help out others. Vigar says that is doing so, “meant an awful lot to him.”
William Was Still Able To Carve Out A Safe Role Within The Military
What was it that William was allowed to do in the military? William was trained to be a search and rescue pilot. “He helped save many, many lives flying that yellow helicopter around the British Isles,” said Vigar.
“So that gave him a meaningful role. And that meant an awful lot to him.”
William performed his military duty for two years. In his role, he flew medical personnel to emergency scenes. During that time he was afforded a degree of privacy and it came after his high-profile wedding to Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge.
William Was Perfect For His Role As A Helicopter Pilot
Royal watcher Katie Nicholl said that William had, “those early years of married life out of the spotlight,” to pursue his military aspirations, as curtailed as they may have been.
“And knowing that in the not too distant future his life and Catherine’s life would be a life of royal duty for the rest of their lives.”

At this point, William is thought to be considering a return to his helicopter duties as a way of doing his part to address the deadly coronavirus pandemic, according to The Sun. A source told the outlet that William is aware that the entire country is doing its part, “and he wants to help.”
“But it’s complicated as he was originally grounded from the job so that he could become a senior working royal.”

There are other royals that could do this work for the queen, William may not be king for a long time, he’s young and needs to feel a man.
