Reality TV blogger John Yates took to Instagram ahead of the weekend to share his support for Perez Hilton. Yates stepped back a lot from online blogging after ten years because social media pressure hurt his mental health.

The News About Perez

Caution, this story might be disturbing to some readers, so if you are struggling with thoughts of suicide, please reach out to a local crisis service.

Celebrating The Soaps reported that emergency workers transported Hilton to a hospital in South Florida on August 5. Journalist Joel Waldman from the Surviving The Survivor podcast said EMTs responded to a scene in Southwest Miami-Dade around 10:00 p.m. ET.

Variety reported that local police safely transported Hilton to a medical facility for psychological evaluation under Florida’s Baker Act provisions.

Anger About The Live

Since the incident, people slammed Hilton’s social media platforms because his live showed him attempting self-harm. Reports from outlets like The Hollywood Reporter showed users criticized TikTok for delayed moderation.

TikTok called the delay a “moderator error” and banned his account.

Relatable For Yates

Yates related to Hilton’s pain. In his Instagram post, he explained that he had tried to end his life twice before. He recalled harming himself during an earlier attempt and said online critics dismissed it as fake or attention-seeking. Yates said the ridicule continued and contributed to another attempt.

The main message from John Yates about Perez Hilton was for people to stop attacking Hilton. “I’m just going to say this about Perez: I have been there,” Yates said.

The influencer mostly known for 90 Day Fiancé vlogs noted that “politically we couldn’t be on more opposite ends of the spectrum.” Yet he asked followers for prayers.

“Being an online presence isn’t easy – that’s why I’ve given it up after 10 years,” Yates shared. He called Hilton “an icon” and told fans to “give this guy a break.”

Readers React

Many followers reacted to his message with kindness, and one of them wrote, “I’ll always love Perez. No hate.” Another person liked that John Yates spoke out about it. They said, “So glad you’re here John and thank you for this post.”

Talking about Perez Hilton, another follower wrote, “His life is based around not respecting peoples’ privacy,” but added, “I hope the best for everyone involved.”

Then another follower noted that “people don’t seem to understand how hard mental illness can be.”

John Was Controversial

Plenty of people followed Yates and he had several backup accounts. However, sometimes he took sides with unpopular characters like Paul Staehle and Angela Deem.

Some people felt that he didn’t give the TLC stars much privacy, and he didn’t always preserve much privacy for himself either.
