Now we’re learning that Prince William pushed pause on it to avoid the Sussexes from further leveraging on his late mother’s image for some much-needed press coverage.
Key Takeaways

- Princess Diana’s legacy is reportedly at the center of the dispute
- William allegedly refused to allow Diana to become part of a Sussex PR strategy
- The disagreement highlights continuing tensions between the brothers
- William remains fiercely protective of his mother’s legacy
Prince William Prevented “Very Keen” Meghan Markle From Doing This
Royal expert Tom Sykes has come forward to shed some light on what might have transpired to cause the Diana Awards gala to be cancelled, even though Meghan was “very keen to go to the event.”
The Diana Awards remains the only charity both brothers support, and before its cancellation, was scheduled to take place at the Raffles Hotel in London on September 18.
Speaking based on the evidence gathered from his research, royal expert Tom Sykes opined, “I wouldn’t be surprised, let’s put it this way, if William felt that he didn’t want his mother’s memory used as a kind of relaunch pad for Meghan in the U.K.”
Sykes told The Royalist Podcast that the 45-year-old former actress was so keen to attend the event, she “had apparently even got to the stage of reaching out to British designers to dress her” for the gala dinner.
“After a lengthy consultation with our lawyers, I am able to say that it’s my understanding that an event organized by the Diana Awards was indeed booked,” Sykes further revealed.
He noted that plans had gotten to the stage of booking musical guests, with “key people” already contacted to assure availability.
“But why is it no longer going ahead? I think it speaks to what you’re saying about the difficulty of the relationship, the difficulty of the situation that Harry is putting William into,” Sykes observed.
What the Sussexes’ Spokesperson Has To Say About the Diana Awards Rumors
Following Sykes’ claims that an enthusiastic Meghan Markle had already started shopping around for red carpet-worthy looks, a spokesperson for the Sussexes released a statement claiming otherwise.
“Despite the Daily Mail’s reporting to the contrary, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are not scheduled to attend a Diana Award event at Raffles Hotel, OWO London, on September 18,” the statement read. “Facts matter. Accuracy matters. Apparently, neither made the guest list for this particular story.”
