Royal family news reveals in his new book, Battle of Brothers: Prince William, Prince Harry, and the Inside Story of a Family in Tumult, royal writer Robert Lacey ticks off the many times Meghan Markle and Prince Harry willfully chose to snub royal protocol. In particular, he points to one instance that could have put the Queen in a very difficult situation.
It was abundantly clear soon after their wedding that Harry and Meghan Markle had no thought or concern for royal tradition. For instance, Meghan and Harry ignored the traditional baby photo op on the hospital steps after Archie was born. On top of that, they waited two days before showing Archie to the world.

Additionally kept their son’s name secret until he was introduced to Queen Elizabeth II. Then there was the private christening in the private chapel at Windsor Castle.
But it was the pair’s decision to keep the identity of Archie’s godparents secret—to this day—that truly snubbed the royal family.
According to Lacey, “It is well understood at Buckingham Palace that not all godparents can make it to a hastily arranged christening service. So in July 2019, Elizabeth II’s Holyrood Week duties in Scotland meant that she and Prince Philip could not attend the ceremony for Archie on July 6.”
“And this date had already been the result of some shuffling of schedules to accommodate the busy summer diaries of Prince Charles, Camilla, William, and Kate – not to mention the Archbishop of Canterbury who was to preside over the rite.”
“Yet it is still expected by monarch, palace and just about anyone with a stake in the game that the world should be told who the new royal baby’s ‘sponsors’ are.” By sponsors he means godparents.
“How can you judge the suitability of a sponsor who remains unknown?” he asks.

“And it is an ingredient of Britain’s representative monarchy that Brits should have the right to know who is giving moral guidance to their possible future king or queen. Here again, however, precedent, protocol, and practice all collided headlong with Harry and Meghan’s firm insistence on their privacy – and that of their new baby.”
The Buckingham Palace statement announcement about Archie’s christening read in part, “The [names of the] godparents, in keeping with their wishes will remain private.”
Majesty magazine’s editor-in-chief Ingrid Seward later said, “I’ve covered five or six christenings in my royal career and I’ve never come across such secrecy.”
In this case, as in countless others, Harry and Meghan once again had their way, but at what price to his loyal family?
