British royal family news reveals that there is a current drama playing out which has the UK’s royal family up in arms. It’s not the reality show The Fresh Prince of Montecito Marries Meghan Thee Stallion. It’s the scripted drama, Netflix’s The Crown.
The shows do intersect: The Crown makes money for Netflix by dragging Prince Harry’s family, and he partnered with the streamer, so he can make money, too.
The monarchy never complain nor explain so it’s hard to know which drama provides them the most heartburn
The Crown has divided fans who either decry its indecent depictions of the very human royals and those who say the show is merely playing out the headlines.
Royal watcher Hugo Vickers is in the former camp, and he’s crying foul on the way Prince Philip is shown interacting with Princess Diana in the fourth and latest season.
According to him the scene is, “wretched and disgraceful.” It’s Christmas 1990 and the royals are at Sandringham. Princess Diana is upstairs when she tells her father-in-law Prince Philip she is in a, “dark, loveless cave,” and wants to “break away.”
He warns her it won’t end well if she takes action, and she replies, “I hope that isn’t a threat, Sir.”
Was A fictional Conversation In The Crown A Reference To Diana’s Impending Death?
According to Vickers the scene alludes to the rumor that Diana’s fatal car crash in Paris in 1997 was a “hit” ordered by Prince Philip. He takes great umbrage of The Crown, “painting Philip as a mafioso bent on bumping off a fragile daughter-in-law.”
He goes on to ask, “Surely the Duke of Edinburgh, the Queen’s loyal consort who has dedicated his life to duty and who is now in his 100th year, deserves better than this?”
According to Vickers, “I have watched each passing episode of The Crown with mounting horror and have dissected all 40 episodes in books charting the untruths the series contain. From the outset, The Crown has been full of not merely inaccuracies but clear and deliberate departures from the truth.”
He goes on to say, “Prince Philip’s treatment by the producers is particularly disgraceful. The drama claims that he refused to kneel at the Queen’s Coronation, for example, that he became a notorious philanderer and that he had been accused by his father of being responsible for the death of his sister Cecile in a plane crash. Wrong, wrong and monstrously wrong.”

Maybe the most startling thing about the scene is that while a total stranger takes such exception to a fictional depiction of Philip, his own grandson, Prince Harry has nothing to say. Maybe his $14 million dollar contract with Netflix says it for him?
