Coronation Street Airs Special Episode For The Deaf Community

Coronation Street Wednesday’s Coronation Street episode (September 22) saw Freda (Ali Briggs) spend most of her time on the cobbles since the death of Norris (Malcolm Hebden). Struggling with the preparation of the funeral, she encountered more problems with her disability as a deaf person, including with George (Tony Maudsley) who often had to shout to converse with her.

The episode also highlighted the pains of a deaf person by showing people’s perception when it comes to learning sign language in order to connect to their silent world.

It all started when Freda disagreed with Chesney (Sam Aston) and Gemma’s (Dolly-Rose Campbell) in their decision to have their young child, Aled’s cochlear implant operation.

But she overheard Bernie and Chesney discussing that it’s a “hassle” to attend deaf groups and British Sign Language (BSL) classes and how they wanted Aled’s operation to be successful so that he can be normal.

However, Freda strongly disagreed about Aled’s cochlear implant, so she carried the little boy to the community center that made Gemma and Bernie (Jane Hazlegrove) worried, for they both struggled to connect to Freda. Will Aled make it to his operation on time?

Gemma worried when Freda and Aled were nowhere to be seen when Norris’ funeral started. Desperate to find the boy so he can make it to his operation schedule, they looked for them on the cobbles and found them in the community center, with Freda getting emotional.

Freda tried to let them understand the side effects of having a cochlear implant. With the help of her interpreter, Gemma, Bernie, and Roy (David Nielson) then realized why Freda won’t support them in this matter.

After that moment, Rita (Barbara Knox) encouraged Freda to let young Aled connect with Gemma.

But the damage has been done as Chesney reported her to the police and declared he didn’t want her near his son’s life ever.

Coronation Street’s Spoilers – Gemma Winter Shows Superb Sign Language Skill

Corrie fans are aware that it’s not the first time that the show highlights the deaf community with some of their scenes. In the past episode, Gemma Winter impressed the viewers with British Sign Language.

The character of Dolly-Rose Campbell delighted the fans for learning sign language as she plays her role as Gemma Winter on the soap that happens to have a deaf little boy.

In one of the scenes, Gemma chatted to Freda and Charlie about her boyfriend, Chesney. She demonstrated a BSL saying: “My head’s been all over the place with everything and me and him were getting at each other.”

Freda then replied, “This is not an easy time for both of you.”

Then, a tough decision was made by the couple regarding their little boy’s cochlear implant operation.
