Millie’s character in the soap, Kelly Neelan, was one of the mobs who attacked the goth Nina Lucas (Mollie Gallagher) and her boyfriend Seb Franklin (Harry Visinoni) which was inspired by the real-life story of Sophie Lancaster who was murdered in 2007.
The Great Manchester Run aims to raise more than £1,500 to support a foundation that provides education and training to diminish hate crime.
The foundation worked with Corrie on a story of Nina and Seb, which is similar to the experience of Sophie Lancaster and her boyfriend, Robert Maltby. They were attacked by a group of youngsters that killed Sophie 13 days later due to severe injuries.
Kelly Neelan was recently jailed due to being involved in the attack that killed the character of Seb Franklin. She was framed by the gang’s leader, Corey Brent (Maximus Evans) while the latter enjoyed freedom by paying witnesses with their wealth.
Coronation Street Spoilers – The Story Behind Coronation Street’s Hate Attack Storyline
Sylvia Lancaster OBE, Sophie’s mom, worked with the producers of Coronation Street as they planned to have a shocking storyline that resembles the death of her daughter, Sophie Lancaster.
Sophie was walking in the park together with her boyfriend, Robert Maltby, in 2007. They were followed by a group of youths later attacked Robert. Sophie tried to protect her boyfriend but she was repeatedly kicked on her head.
The police were not able to immediately determine which of them was male and female, as both attained severe injuries.
It was being said that the two were being attacked because of Sophie’s way of being a “goth”. She likes wearing dark clothes and her dyed hair in dreadlocks.
Everything that happened to Sophie and Robert was similar to the experience of the characters of Nina Lucas and Seb Franklin.
As documented by The Sun, in an exclusive interview, Sylvia said, “I wanted to make sure that Nina is a proper representation, and she really is — she played so well. It’s a very good portrayal.”
Sylvia also shared her thoughts on how people would deal whenever they see goths. Attacks would happen because they tend to be immediately scared of the difference between that certain person.
“This episode will really get people to question things, it should start the conversation in the living room about people’s prejudices,” she added.
