Coronation Street Star Samia Longchambon Believes Maria Is A Better Councilor Than Rival Sally

Coronation Street: Samia Longchambon“Coronation Street” actress Samia Longchambon has spoken about her character’s decision to run for councilor and revealed the reason why she’s better than her rival.

In upcoming episodes of the ITV series, Samia’s character Maria Connor will face a showdown with rival Sally Metcalfe (Sally Dynevor) to be the street’s next politician and spoilers revealed it will be a dirty competition.

Samia has spoken with Inside Soap magazine and expressed her surprise for her character to pursue a future politics on the soap saying she “would never have expected” Maria to make such a decision.

The actress explained it happened “organically” as her decision was built on her previous experience with son Liam, during his health horror storyline with asthma. Samia has had a change of heart regarding air pollution on the cobbles and vowed to mitigate it by being openly spoken with her campaign. “I get why she’s doing it,” she said.

The actress has also commented on the tension between Maria and her rival Sally Metcalfe as the two will end up dragging each other down in the next scenes. Both have become active in solving local issues with Sally raising concerns for traffic congestion while Maria continues her fight for air pollution, but their relationship will be put to test as the next election nears.

Sally will be shocked when Maria emerges as her rival and so she tries to talk her out, pointing out she’s inexperienced for the position. However, Maria runs prepared and mentioned Sally’s involvement with a crime which saw her getting locked up in prison. How far will they go to fight each other?

When asked about Maria’s decision to run, Samia explained: “She’s in this for the right reasons, so I think Maria has integrity and would probably make a much better councillor than Sally.”

Samia added she thinks Sally was only driven by her status and entitlement. “But maybe I’m biased!” she disclaimed.

Despite their ongoing war on-screen, Samia reassured her fans she’s good with Sally behind the cameras. “Sally [Dynevor] is a great friend, obviously we’ve known each other for decades,” she said.

“Sometimes we can’t film together for laughing, which is so nice as it feels as though we’re doing good old Corrie – the fun stuff, but with a serious message at the heart of it. We just don’t stop smiling,” she added.
