Al Pacino Convinced Johnny Depp To Take On ‘Modi’

Johnny Depp’s comeback to Hollywood may not be as meteoric as his initial rise to fame, but he’s definitely taking more meaningful steps than cancelled counterpart Kevin Spacey.

However bold he’s been to so far carve his Hollywood comeback, he wouldn’t have taken on his latest project had it not been for an old friend.

Depp is still winning and scoring points despite being accused of sexual and physical abuse from his ex Amber Heard. For one his ‘Modi’ stars believe that “he’s the nicest, the kindest, the sweetest man I’ve ever worked with in my life” and should be celebrated so.

‘Modi’ marks Depp’s second directorial project and first in as many years. The movie follows Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani’s life, with legendary actor Al Pacino playing one of the lead roles.

The story happens against a backdrop of Paris in the middle of World War II, as the artist struggles with staying true to his artistic vision while overcoming class-based snobbery in his bid for recognition.

At the movie’s press conference on Tuesday, Depp explained that Pacino talked him into picking up the project. “When Pacino speaks, you must listen,” he said.

While the idea to take on the project might not have come from him, he soon recognized some parallels between his colorful life and Modigliani’s. “I’m sure we can say that I’ve been through a number of things here and there. Maybe yours didn’t turn into a soap opera,” he said, referencing the trial. “I mean, literally, televised.”[

Riccardo Scamarcio stars in the titular role alongside Antonia Desplat, Al Pacino and Stephen Graham.

During the movie’s press conference on Tuesday, Scarmarcio and his co-stars had nothing but praise for Depp, who didn’t only coach them on the movie, but did so in a way that they were able to showcase their fantasies and grow their confidence.

Praising Depp for how he approached directing them, Scarmarcio said, “He has heart and trust, which is, I think, the most important things for an actor.

They need to feel this trust from the director. It’s critical. And it’s very strange because [Depp] puts you in a position where you feel free to deliver whatever you want but then he drives you with very smart and precise indications. It’s fantastic, because you feel free, but safe.”
