After taking a twenty year hiatus from performing a full set, Joni Mitchell, 79, stepped back on stage this July with news that there’s more exciting things to come.
Yep, the star is making a music comeback and the surprise performance at Newport Folk Festival is only a first step.
A New Live Album Based On Joni Mitchell’s Newport Folk Festival Will Be Dropping Soon
It may have been more than 20 years since the last time Joni Mitchell stepped out on stage, but she still owns it. After what was an astounding success performing live – and I’m sure the fans had just as much a great time as she did – she has decided to release it as a live album so that fans can enjoy it wherever and whenever they want to.
Mitchell made her announcement on Elton John‘s Apple Music Show Rocket Hour and announced her plans to release a new live album that will be based on her Newport Folk Festival performance from July 2022. The special episode of the show saw the singer invite Elton John to her home to discuss her future musical plans.
“People out there, you haven’t heard things from the Newport Folk Festival yet, but I think there’s going to be an album coming out of that one?” John, 75, asked, as the musician responded, “Yeah, we’re trying to put that out.”
The surprise appearance saw her perform a full setlist featuring classic songs like “A Case Of You”, “Both Sides Of You”, and “Big Yellow Taxi”.
Apart from 2015’s “Brain Aneurysm”, the star has been mostly scant when it comes to putting on a show for her fans. Elton John credited her enthusiasm to return to the stage to her “incredible rehabilitation”, adding, “Music has helped you so much, and it’s beautiful to watch you evolve.”
Joni Mitchell – On Her Journey To Recovery And Getting Back Onstage
On a previous interview with CBS News, The “Big Yellow Taxi” singer revealed that she worked hard to relearn the things she could formerly do as a performer, including playing the guitar.
“You stood up and played guitar,” John said, as Mitchell replied, “Yeah, that. I had to figure out what I did.”
“And I couldn’t sing the key, I’ve become an alto. I’m not a soprano anymore, so I couldn’t sing the song,” she continued. “And I thought people might feel lighted that if I just played the guitar part, but I like the guitar part to that song. So anyway, it was very well received, much to my delight.”
Mitchell had shared the stage at Rhode Island festival with fellow musician Brandi Carlile, who confidently said that she believes Joni Mitchell will be back onstage soon during a chat with The Daily Show’s Trevor Noah.
She also said that Joni Mitchell was excited to perform again after their performance together in July that she offered her a slot on her June 2023 show taking place at the Gorge Amphitheatre in George, Washington.
