Amber Heard Decides To Settle Johnny Depp Defamation Case Out Of Court After Appealing

Amber Heard has opted to settle Depp out of court to avoid the rollercoaster that was their life for months. Heard, 36, had previously been ordered to pay Depp $10 million after the jury ruled in his favor on all three counts of his defamation case.

Depp, in turn, was ordered to pay Heard $2 million after his lawyer, Adam Waldman, called her abuse claims a “hoax”.

Both have since appealed the ruling, with Heard formerly trying to have the verdict thrown out, but was denied by the presiding Judge, Penny Azcarate.

Amber Heard – Says Her Settlement Doesn’t Mean She Admits To Being Wrong

After dating for a few years, the “Pirates of the Caribbean” star and the “Aquaman” actress tied the knot in 2015. They were married for two years before their highly publicized divorce in 2017.

But it wasn’t until Heard wrote an op-ed for Washington Post that the fires of division was really stoked. At the height of the “Me Too” movement, Heard became the poster girl for domestic abuse survivors.

For the coming years, Depp and his team would deny these accusations, with Depp being cut from many of his high paying roles. After losing to UK’s The Sun for calling him a “wife beater”, Depp and his team decided to tackle the problem from the source and launched a $50 million defamation lawsuit against Heard.

In return, Heard also filed a defamation case of her own – this time, raising the bar to $100 million.

Heard lost to Depp on all three counts after the highly publicized and grueling lawsuit came to an end on June 1. Immediately after the ruling, Elaine Bredehoft, who later left her legal team, confirmed that the actress would appeal the verdict.

A few weeks later, it was revealed that Heard has appealed the verdict, with Depp following suit.

So you can imagine it was a shock for fans to know that the warring exes have settled out of court a while ago. The terms of the agreement which she announced on Monday puts an end to any further litigation between Heard and Depp over their claims against each other for now.

Amber Heard – Insists She Didn’t Want To Settle

In an Instagram post, Amber Heard said that it was not her choice to settle.

“After a great deal of deliberation I have made a very difficult decision to settle the defamation,” she began the post.

“It’s important for me to say that I never chose this,” the post read. “I defended my truth and in doing so my life as I knew it was destroyed. The vilification I have faced on social media is an amplified version of the ways in which women are re-victimized when they come forward.

She concluded: “Now I finally have an opportunity to emancipate myself from something I attempted to leave over six years ago and on terms I can agree to. I have made no admission. This is not an act of concession. There are no restrictions or gags with respect to my voice moving forward.”
