Angelina Jolie Is In Yemen, Talking About Level Of Human Suffering She’s Witnessing

Angelina JolieThe civil war in Yemen needs attention and Angelina Jolie is making sure the “unimaginable suffering” happening there gets the attention it deserves, maybe even enough to affect reasonable change.

Angelina Jolie – Speaks Out On Yemen’s Civil War

The actress, humanitarian and Special Envoy for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) spent three days in Yemen in order to see firsthand the horrors of the people as the country is engulfed in an ongoing civil war.

In a release obtained by PEOPLE, Jolie, 46, shared her experience meeting with “both internally displaced Yemenis as well as refugees in the north and south of the country,” and seeing just how much suffering” they are going through.

“For every day that Yemen’s brutal conflict continues, more and more innocent lives are lost and more people will continue to suffer,” she continued. “We live in a world where suffering and horror dominates headlines, but where such headlines can result in overwhelming displays of compassion and international solidarity.”

Jolie also shared her hopes for the war to end, writing: “this compassion and solidarity will be extended to the people of Yemen, who urgently need a swift and peaceful resolution to this conflict – and to other displaced people, whoever and wherever they are in the world.”

“With over 80 million people displaced worldwide and aid appeals underfunded globally, we urgently need to find solutions that enable conflicts to be addressed and displaced people to be able to return home in dignity and safety,” Jolie concluded.

Jolie has been known to use her platform to campaign for compassion towards displaced people, who are going through so much in a foreign land with no homes or jobs.

Per the release, Angelina Jolie’s mission in Yemen is “to draw attention to the devastating consequences of the seven-year-old conflict on the civilian population.”

On Sunday, Jolie landed in the Middle Eastern nation, writing at the time that she had arrived in the capital city of Aden “to meet displaced families and refugees for UNHCR @refugees and show my support for the people of Yemen.”

Angelina Jolie – How Bad Is the Conflict In Yemen

Jolie called for people to not be selective of who they show “kindness” and “compassion” to. This is coming after she commented about the displacement of people over the “horrific war in Ukraine”.

Yemen has been enduring an internal conflict since 2014, with both the Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi-led Yemeni government and the Supreme Political Council’s Houthi movement claiming to run the country. As of right now, millions of Yemeni citizens continue to face starvation due to famine, while it’s been reported that more than 100,000 civilians have so far died since the beginning of the civil war.
