Chances are if you know anything about Opera, you’ve probably heard of Maria Callas, the legendary opera singer who thrilled the world with her voice.
To bring her story to live onscreen, Angelina Jolie reportedly underwent some of the toughest trainings of her career. At this point, she’s more than proved that she’s honored to snag the lead role in the upcoming biopic.
Pablo Larraín – Reveals How He Wooed Angelina Jolie To Star As Opera Singer Maria Callas In His Personal Movie
Talk about dreams coming true. Pablo Larraín and Angelina Jolie had met a few times over the years, with the director hoping to make a movie with her one day.
After wrapping up the Kristen Stewart-led Princess Diana biopic ‘Spencer,’ Larraín was ready to jump into his next English-language project, and he already had a star in mind for the role.
“I talked to Angie and said, ‘Look, I’d like to make a movie with you. I won’t tell you what it is, but please go and see Spencer,’” he said.
He didn’t only tell Jolie to see the movie, he made sure she saw it in style as he rented out a screening room on the Paramount lot for Jolie to watch the movie.
After watching the Oscar-nominated biopic, Jolie was so thrilled that she raved and raved about it. When Larraín made her the offer to play Maria, she took some days to consider it.
However, when she called to accept the role, it was because she had gotten to know more about and fall in love with the star.
The movie will reportedly not focus on her younger years or even the peak of her fame, but on her later days, in the lead-up to her heart attack at age 53.
“She became the sum of the tragedies that she played on stage,” Larraín said. “The movie is about someone who, after dedicating her life to the audiences around the world that would listen to her, decides to find her own voice, her own identity, and finally do something just for herself.”

For six months, Jolie chipped and grinded to properly pay homage to Maria Callas. Larraín described her preparation as “very long, very particular, very difficult.”
She worked on breathing, posture, accent and took voice lessons to improve her singing.
For those who still doubt whether Jolie will be singing in the movie, Larraín wants you to think again. “How can you make a movie about Maria Callas without using her voice? You can’t,” he said,
stressing, “You can’t make a movie like this with an actress that is not actually singing it. This is the real thing—it was very scary for her, but she did it.”
