Angelina Jolie’s Campaign Against ‘Rape In War’ Finally Achieves Milestone Justice

Angelina Jolie may be more universally known for being an incredible bad-ass gun-slinging woman on screen, but this actress has fought against one of the world’s most atrocious injustices. Jolie has always proven from time to time that she has a heart that is much bigger than her body, even though she has been subject to a lot of controversies and media coverage, either based on her acting career or personal life. But she rose against the challenges, using her platform to fight for other people.

After a lot of whirlwind and negative coverage on her personal life, her reputation began to change for the good when she was made the Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees at age 26. It was a role which she happily accepted, commenting that she now had a role that will allow her to fight for something important.

Previous And Ongoing Works On Human Rights And Women’s Rights

Jolie fronted a campaign against sexual violence in military conflict zones by the UK government, which made the issue a priority of its 2013 G8 presidency. A year before, in May 2012, she launched the Preventing Sexual Violence Initiative (PSVI) with foreign secretary William Hague, who became invested in the issue through her Bosnian war drama In the Land of Blood and Honey.

The PSVI was launched to aid wider UK government work by raising awareness and enabling international co-operation. Jolie spoke on the subject during the G8 foreign ministers meeting, where the present nations adopted a historic declaration by opening up the issue in debate, thereby allowing for the widest participation possible. She again spoke before the UN Security Council, which responded by adopting its broadest resolution on the issue to date.

In June 2014, she co-chaired a four-day Global Summit to End Sexual Violence In Conflict, the biggest meeting ever on the subject, which not only led to a protocol endorsed by 151 nations, but brought the issue to the world’s attention, encouraging everyone to act.

The Security Council imposed sanctions on Sultan Saleh Aida Aida Zabin, a top police security official in Yemen’s capital, in response to his prominent role in leading and implementing horrific crimes against politically active women. It was a historic moment for the world when UN stepped in to put an end to Zabin’s policy of arresting, detaining, torturing, and even heinously enforcing sexual violence against women.

It is expected that in time, all the women whom Zabin have wronged would be able to appear in court and bring the traitor to justice.

According to a statement by the council, “In these sites, women, including at least one minor, were forcibly disappeared, repeatedly interrogated, raped, tortured, denied timely medical treatment and subjected to forced labor,” also stating that “Zabin himself directly inflicted torture in some cases.”

It is a great step for the international community to condemn these atrocious crimes, and I’m personally grateful to Jolie and all those who either worked with her or worked alone to bring the issue to the headlines. I believe that no matter where you are or who you are, if there’s an issue that’s worth fighting for, there’s no one better to do it than yourself.
