Backstreet Boys’ Nick Carter Files $2.5M Countersuit Against His Rape Accuser

Nick Carter from the Backstreet Boys has had some challenging times over the past few years. In 2022, he lost his younger brother Nick Carter, and then in 2023, he lost his sister, Bobbie Jean Carter.

In addition to all this, Melissa Schuman came out with allegations that the singer sexually assaulted her, in April 2023. Carter is now striking back over this claim with a $2.5 million-dollar countersuit.

Backstreet Boys Nick Carter’s Rape Allegations

Schuman alleges that in 2003, Nick Carter took her back to his apartment in Santa Monica, CA, as both were reportedly filming a teen thriller together, called The Hollow.

She claims that he gave her a sedative, and then sexually assaulted her. Nick, who is currently 44 but 22 years old at the time of the alleged incident, had a lot of things in common with Melissa, who was 18 years old.

Schuman was the lead singer of an all-girl band called Dream, while Nick is most famous for his all-boy band, The Backstreet Boys.

While Melissa filed her claim this past April, she had previously made these sexual assault accusations in 2017, in a blog.

She also stated she wanted to come forward sooner but her manager, Nils Larsen, stated that Carter had the most” powerful” litigator in the U.S.

Backstreet Boys Nick Carter’s Counter-Claim

Carter’s counterclaim notes that Schuman was trying to defame him with her allegations, stating she named him as her rapist via social media.

He also states Melissa made claims during a press conference and documentary, between the times of September 2023 to May 2024.

Carter notes in his countersuit that he believes these allegations are in an effort to rejuvenate Melissa’s “dwindling” career.

Carter’s countersuit notes that Nick believes Schuman is acting, “with a specific intent to damage Carter’s reputation and interfere with his business opportunities, advantages and contracts.”

In addition, Nick denies “each and every” accusation within Melissa’s case. His attorney has stated that “Carter did not sexually assault” and refutes claims that he’s trying to “cover-up” her accusations.

Carter was also sued for allegedly sexually assaulting Shannon Ruth in late 2022, and he filed a countersuit against her in Nevada. According to Shannon’s claim, the assault occurred in 2001 on a tour bus.

Nick filed a motion on this case stating it was “factually impossible” for this to have occurred. Melissa Schuman was named in this counter case, too.
