Former President Barack Obama took home an Emmy in a history-making moment. And Obama competed against some of the entertainment world’s most beloved stars in the process. But his narration for a highly praised performance resulted in his Emmy win, noted the Wrap.

The former President won the Outstanding Narrator Emmy Award for his contributions to the Netflix documentary Our Great National Parks. As a result, he became the first President to score an Emmy in a competitive category. However, Dwight D. Eisenhower previously received an Emmy honor in a non-competitive category. And the Emmys recognized Eisenhower with a Prime Time Emmy Governors Award in 1956. Awarded for appreciating television, that Emmy resulted from the first televised press conference.

However, Obama previously won two Grammy Awards. And he also scores as the first PENG (President, Emmy, Nobel and Grammy winner). In contrast, former president Donald Trump earned two Emmy nominations and zero wins.

Pop Culture Watchers Analyze President Obama’s Emmy

In competing for that Emmy, the former President faced a field of famous competitors. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, David Attenborough, W. Kamau Bell and Lupita Nyong’o all received nods for the Outstanding Narrator Emmy award. However, Obama’s win results from a specific episode of the Netflix documentary series Our Great National Parks, noted the Hollywood Reporter.

Obama narrated the episode entitled “A World of Wonder.” Features in that episode ranged from Africa’s beaches to Japan’s islands to Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. The former President previously received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2009. His Grammy Awards resulted from his spoken word albums, The Audacity of Hope: Thoughts on Reclaiming the American Dream and Dreams from My Father.

However, some celeb watchers dubbed the former President’s Emmy win as a significant moment in pop culture history. For instance, one Reddit commentator wrote, “This feels weird, right? Like this whole intertwining of celebrity culture and politics we’ve seen take hold since the 80’s? I mean I know it’s existed in some form for a long time, but it seems like it’s been accelerating since then. I don’t know if that’s conducive to a healthy society.”

But others felt that the former President deserved the Emmy. For example, one fan wrote, “No surprise, he’s a top notch orator and the most likeable President the US has seen in decades. Dude is actually living it up post-President, that’s pretty rare.”
