Benedict Cumberbatch Says He Would Return As Sherlock Holmes, Under One Condition

Benedict Cumberbatch Says He Would Return As Sherlock Holmes, Under One ConditionYou will not believe it when I tell you the number of times an Avenger has also played Sherlock Holmes onscreen. Two! I know the number is not much, but it’s still impressive, right?

First up, we have our very own Robert Downey Jr., who, for the uninitiated played Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

But then we’ve also got Benedict Cumberbatch – who need no introduction as Dr. Strange, surely – playing the lead role in the Sherlock Holmes British TV series created by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss.

In his latest interview, Cumberbatch revealed that returning as the illustrious crime solver Sherlock Holmes is not completely off the table. There’s just one thing that the creators have to get right.

Benedict Cumberbatch Wants Future ‘Sherlock Holmes’ To Leave Fans Wanting More

Unlike Robert Downey Jr.’s Sherlock Holmes, who is rather gifted with the ability to see ghosts and things of the netherworld, Cumberbatch’s has to rely on wit and curious deductions to solve complicated crimes.

In his latest appearance on Variety, the star, 48, finally touched on whether a future season for his ‘Sherlock Holmes’ – 2010 to 2017 – is ever going to be a possibility. And while he admitted it would cost a “lot of money” to have him return for a brand new season, he did give fans hope on a possible grand return.

“It would take it to be better than it ever was,” he added. “You leave them or yourselves wanting more. There’s always that itch to scratch, but I think it would have to be the superlative version of what we’ve already achieved.”

Cumberbatch also recalled that this isn’t the first time that he’s been open about being versatile with his acting career and his desire to play even more challenging characters.

“I went, ‘Guys, I know you really like Sherlock, but if you’re with me, I’m not going to always do the same thing,’” he recalled. “‘I’m not going to always be the Benedict that you expect. You might not like some of the stuff I do. I may be cute and cuddly to you at times, or ugly and untouchable. But I want to stretch myself and surprise myself and surprise you.’”

As of this moment, he is primarily focused on the entertainment company he founded in 2013, called SunnyMarch, which he revealed allows him to produce works that are meaningful to him.

“These are urgent stories that we feel a need to tell,” he told the outlet. “I tend to appear in many of them so we can finance something that’s either about a difficult subject or is really a niche piece of art-house cinema that deserves to be seen.”
