Actor Akili McDowell has been arrested and charged with murder in connection with the shooting death of a 20-year-old man. On July 20, deputies from the Harris County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of a shooting in the parking lot of an apartment complex at 13503 North Thorntree in East Harris County, Houston, Texas.
Authorities have confirmed that 21-year-old Akili McDowell, known for his roles in shows like Billions, David Makes Man, and The Astronaut Wives Club has been charged with murder.
McDowell’s Acting Career
McDowell’s breakout role came in the 2015 series The Astronaut Wives Club, and he later starred in Criminal Activities and Billions. He is also set to appear in the upcoming movie The Waterboyz.
McDowell is recognized for his role in the series David Makes Man, created by Oscar winner Tarell Alvin McCraney and loosely based on his life.

19 interview with Oprah, McDowell, then 15, emphasized that the show highlights the possibility of personal growth and improvement despite challenging circumstances.
He echoed similar sentiments in interviews with Vulture and People, relating his character’s experiences to his own life.
Sheriff’s Update, Charges and Legal Proceedings
Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez provided updates on the incident via Facebook.
He stated: “On July 20, 2024, Harris County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to an incident that occurred in the parking lot of an apartment complex at 13503 North Thorntree, near Wallisville and Uvalde (East Harris County). An adult male (possibly in his 20s) sustained gunshot wounds and was pronounced deceased at the scene. Suspect(s) fled the scene.”
In a subsequent update, Sheriff Gonzalez reported that homicide investigators charged McDowell with “murder in the shooting death of Cesar Peralta” aged 20. The actor was arrested, taken into custody, and booked into Harris County Jail.
Charge documents obtained by Law & Crime state that McDowell “on or about July 20, 2024, did then and there unlawfully, intentionally and knowingly cause the death of Cesar Peralta by shooting the Complainant with a deadly weapon, namely a firearm.”
Harris County police records show that McDowell was out on bond for a theft charge at the time of the shooting, booked on that charge on August 1.
His bond has been set at $400,000, and he is scheduled to appear in court today (August 6) for the theft charge, with another court date set for October 9 regarding the murder charge.
McDowell’s manager, Jonell Whit, commented on the situation, stating: “This is an unfortunate situation, and I am in prayer for Akili and those impacted by this tragedy. I respectfully have no comment at this time.”
