Chloë Moretz Opens Up About How Online Body Shaming Almost Destroyed Her Mental HealthPeople often love to have fun on the internet regardless of whether it’s at the expense of other people. A viral meme about Chloë Grace Moretz’s body made the young actress feel highly insecure in her skin. And all this mental stress for what? A couple of laughs and hysterical emojis?

But Moretz has worked on herself and she’s not letting the mean jokes get to her anymore.

Chloë Moretz – Says Being Famous At A Young Age Messed Her Up

Moretz chatted with HUNGER for their upcoming cover story, which will be available on newsstands this coming Tuesday, about growing up under the glare of the spotlight. She confessed that while she did everything right publicly, it wasn’t always so behind-the-scenes.

Speaking on her horrifying experiences, the star recalled, “The first time I experienced Paparazzi, it was 10 to 15 adult guys surrounding a 12-year-old girl. It’s an assault on all the senses, with screaming and flashes. I got into the car afterwards, and I just burst into tears.”

For the “Tom And Jerry” star, growing up under such scrutiny really did do a number on her.

Whilst she’s never complained about this before, the actress decided to point out that a meme created from a photo of her entering a hotel with a pizza box and later compared to the “Family Guy” character known as “Legs Go All The Way Up Griffin” was not something that she found funny. In fact it affected her negatively.

“I’ve actually never really talked about this, but there was one meme that really affected me, of me walking into a hotel with a pizza box in my hand,” she told Hunger about the viral meme. “And this photo got manipulated into a character from Family Guy with the long legs and the short torso, and it was one of the most widespread memes at the time.”

She continued, saying how self-conscious the meme makes her everytime she happens to see it. “Everyone was making fun of my body, and I brought it up with someone, and they were like, ‘Oh, shut the f–k up, it’s funny,'” Moretz said. “And I just remember sitting there and thinking, my body is being used as a joke, and it’s something that I can’t change about who I am, and it is being posted all over Instagram.”

She continued, “It was something so benign as walking into a hotel with leftovers. And to this day, when I see that meme, it’s something very hard for me to overcome.”
