Disney is apparently invested in keeping up with one of their most successful franchises, ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ with or without Johnny Depp at the helm.
When Disney decided to part ways with Depp at the height of the Amber Heard controversies, Reports soon emerged that they were looking forward to having an all-female led reboot starring ‘Barbie’s’ own Margot Robbie, but the idea didn’t take.
Now there are plans to bring Dune’s ‘Austin Butler’ onboard and fans can’t wait to see it. The downside? We might have to live with having Austin Butler have a pirate accent for the next five years or so.
Disney Courts Austin Butler For A Potential ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’
In 2003, Johnny Depp played the rum-loving, always scheming, Captain Jack Sparrow for the first time in ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.’ In 2006, he returned for ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest.’ The following year, he reprised his role in ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End.’
A huge change was made in the 2011 installment ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides’ as two of the main stars Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley were written off, although Depp returned. The last movie in the franchise so far is 2017’s ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.’
According to multiple sources, Disney has two separate ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ scripts in development, none of which features Johnny Depp. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer has confirmed that there is interest in a female-led reboot.
In March 2024, Bruckheimer confirmed that the franchise will indeed be rebooted as it will be easier to do so than going through the motions of trying to coax old stars to return.
As Disney continues to proceed with their plans to reboot the franchise, they’ve reportedly shown interest in bringing in the ‘Elvis’ and ‘Dune 2’ star Austin Butler.
At this point, it’s unknown whether Disney has officially made an offer or even if they’re already in the process of negotiating for the role.
Just recently, Orlando Bloom praised Depp’s commitment to his ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ character, saying, “He built out a character that I think he really enjoyed playing. It’s fun to see actors really love what they’re doing and sort of laughing at themselves a little.”
