In a recent conversation with the “Los Angeles Times,” Drew Barrymore shared with the outlet how hard she took her divorce from ex-husband Will Kopelman in 2016. She told the outlet that she was depressed to the extent that she took to alcohol and got addicted. She shared that it got to a point where her therapist Barry Michels quit on her.
The star of “The Wedding Singer,” while recalling her ordeal with Barry said, “He just said, ‘I can’t do this anymore,’ It was really about my drinking. I said, ‘I get it. I’ve never respected you more. You see I’m not getting better. And I hope, one day, that I can earn your trust back.'” — per Entertainment Weekly. Her therapist has responded to her revelation.
Drew Barrymore — Barry Said, “Occasionally A Therapist Has To Suspend Treatment”
Drew’s therapist Barry Michels is a popular celebrity therapist who has handled high-class celebrities such as Gwyneth Paltrow. He also co-authored the book “The Tools” with Phil Stutz.
In his response to Drew’s story which he replied via email, Barry explained his reasons for putting his sessions with the “Riding In Cars With Boys” actress on hold. “Occasionally a therapist has to suspend treatment until a patient is willing to stop certain chronic self-destructive behaviors that are impeding the therapy.”
He continued “Fortunately, in this case, I was dealing with Drew Barrymore — one of the strongest and most stalwart people I’ve ever met.” Barry also shared that after Drew put herself together they resumed their sessions again. “She did the right thing for herself, and we were able to resume our treatment together.”
Drew Barrymore — Drew Barrymore’s Friend Cameron Diaz Stood By Her
The “Charlie’s Angels” alum once revealed to PEOPLE how difficult her split with Will was for her. She said, “There was no scandal. Nothing went wrong, which is cleaner, but makes it harder and more confusing because there isn’t The Thing to point to,” The 48-year-old continued, “We tried so hard to make it work. [A friend] said to me, ‘Divorce is the death of a dream.’ That’s exactly what it feels like, something so final you can’t get it back.”
Someone who witnessed firsthand Drew’s depression after the divorce is her friend Cameron Diaz. She described it as “difficult to watch,” but believed that Drew will definitely pull through if she stood by her. “But, I knew that if we all stuck with her and gave her the support she needed, she would find her way,” said Cameron. “I have absolute faith in her. You can’t even comprehend how hard it was to be her as a child, and then she shot out the other end with the ability to save herself.”
Drew’s marriage with Will Kopelman lasted four years and they share two daughters, Olive and Frankie.
