Ed Sheeran Says He Watched the Coronation Even Though He Wasn’t Invited To Perform

It would have been “perfect” to have Ed Sheeran perform at King Charles’ coronation concert, but alas it was not meant to be. Here’s what Ed Sheeran has to say about it.

You’ve probably heard the rumors going around and saying that King Charles couldn’t get the stars he wanted at his coronation, so he would have to make do with those who agreed to perform?

Some of the big names reportedly said to snub the King included global superstar Adele and of course, your one and only, Ed Sheeran.

However, this couldn’t be farther from the truth. Appearing on SiriusXM’s The Morning Mash Up, the “Bad Habits” singer confirmed that he wouldn’t be performing at the coronation because he wasn’t invited to do so.

“I want to clear something up actually because there was loads of stuff in the press that I turned down the coronation, and no one ever asked me ever,” Sheeran, 32, said.

“I assume if they went online and went, ‘What’s Ed doing on May 6th?’ they would’ve been like, ‘Oh, he’s playing in Dallas.’ I think that’s what happened, but obviously, [the] press had the negative story of loads of people turning down the coronation. But I never ever turned it down,” he explained.

Even though scheduling might have prevented him from being on the grounds as history was made, he will be tuning in.

Sheeran will be involved in this season’s American Idol as Katy Perry and Lionel Richie make their way to the UK to put on an epic performance for the King.

“When we’re up there, we’re speaking from the heart. And Alanis and Ed, they’ll do that also,” judge Luke Bryan explained to PEOPLE in a group interview after the announcement. “They’re obviously seasoned in every aspect of the industry. It’s funny. Over the years, Lionel and Katy probably can almost predict what I’m going to say. So it’ll be interesting that I’ll be up there with people that I can’t predict exactly what they’re going to say.”

Sheeran will be performing one of his new songs on the reality competition series.
