Former HBO Executive Says James Gandolfini Challenged Him to Fire Him from The Sopranos

One of the best performances on television was solidified when James Gandolfini played Tony Soprano in The Sopranos. But maybe he was worn out from having to bring the nuanced persona to life.

The documentary Wise Guy: David Chase and The Sopranos discussed an intervention that former HBO CEO Chris Albrecht arranged for Gandolfini to address his alcohol troubles.

Albrecht claims that after a tense period, they convened at his New York residence to settle differences. Gandolfini, however, reacted angrily upon seeing his friends and family present.

“We did an intervention with him at my apartment in New York,” Albrecht said. “That was to try to get him to go to a facility for rehab. We’d had a lot of friction by that point. He walked in, saw everyone, and said, ‘Aw, f— this.’ He turned to me and went, ‘Fire me,’ and then left.”

Gandolfini History With The Show And Accolades

Gandolfini persevered as the show’s central figure over all six seasons, from 1999 to 2007, in spite of these difficulties. He won three Emmys for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Dramatic Series for his compelling performance.

Although Gandolfini wasn’t always easy to work with, The Sopranos creator David Chase agreed that his skill was apparent. Chase described the actor as “one of the greatest actors of this or any time,” adding that his brilliance was reflected in his expressive eyes. “A great deal of that genius resided in those sad eyes,” Chase said. “I remember telling him, ‘You don’t get it. You’re like Mozart.’ But there would always be silence on the other end of the phone.”

Chase’s search for the perfect Tony Soprano was extensive, and when Gandolfini initially auditioned, he didn’t think he did well. However, a second attempt at Chase’s house sealed the role for him. “Bang,” Chase recalled. “It was pretty obvious when Jim did it. He was Tony.”

Gandolfini’s Commitment To His Role And His Co-Stars

Both on and off set, Gandolfini’s commitment to his role and his co-stars was clear. Adriana La Cerva, his co-star, recalled how Gandolfini showed kindness by agreeing to a new contract that paid him $1 million for each episode. Gandolfini presented many cast members with $30,000 checks each without their knowledge.

“When Jim got the deal, none of us knew it was even on the table,” de Matteo said. “We didn’t know to negotiate. I think he felt terrible about that, so he called us all into his trailer one by one and gave everybody a check for $30,000.”

Edie Falco, who played Tony’s wife, Carmela, confirmed this story, although she humorously noted that she never received a check. “That sounds like him,” Falco said, adding, “He was a very good-hearted, kind man looking out for his friends.”

The impact of Gandolfini goes beyond his honors and distinctions. The entertainment business suffered a devastating loss when he passed away on June 19, 2013, at the age of 51, due to a heart attack. Nonetheless, Gandolfini’s influence on television drama will endure for years to come thanks to his portrayal as Tony Soprano.
