Friends fans lost a legend in 2023 when Matthew Perry passed away at the age of 54 years old. Matthew Perry became a 90’s icon after his portrayal of Chandler Bing on the wildly popular sitcom.
The Friends cast and fans who watched him over the years were devastated by his unexpected passing. So, why wouldn’t the BAFTA’s acknowledge him in the Memoriam section?
Technically, the BAFTAs are film awards, so one could argue that Matthew Perry wasn’t known for films, but for a TV show. But, he was in several popular movies over the years, like “17 Again” and “The Whole Nine Yards.”
Matthew Perry Snubbed
We weren’t the only ones who noticed Matthew Perry was missing from this week’s BAFTA Awards In Memorium. In fact, several disgruntled Friends fans took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to share their grievances.
There was actually such an uproar on social media over Matthew Perry being snubbed that the BAFTAs released an official statement regarding the matter.
Per Page Six, “Responding to Perry’s absence from the tribute, BAFTA tweeted, “Matthew Perry will be remembered in this year’s TV Awards ceremony,” and shared a link to the academy’s online tribute to the actor.
Friends Fans Speak Out Against BAFTAs
In the BAFTAs defense, Matthew Perry was more known for his role on television, and not in films. So, it would make more sense if they honored his death during the TV Awards.
If you are familiar with the UK Awards, then you know that being tributed during the film awards is way more prestigious.
However, fans also need to keep in mind that people in the UK may watch Friends re-runs and be familiar with Matthew Perry, but he wasn’t actually on any British TV shows.
Do you think that Matthew Perry was snubbed, or did the BAFTAs make the right decision to honor him on the next awards show?
