Wow, I’m trying to imagine the “Late Late Show” without James Corden and I’m coming up blank. For many years, whenever someone recalls watching something on “The Late Late Show”, my mind immediately thinks of James Corden.
But, it’s come time to say goodbye and as emotional as it is, Corden knows that it’s what’s best for his family.
James Corden – Calls His Time On “The Late Late Show” An “Adventure”
After eight years of solid entertainment, James Corden will be stepping back as the host of “The Late Late Show”.
This Monday, the British TV host appeared on “The Drew Barrymore Show” to discuss the reason why he thought this was the perfect time to leave the post. Yes, he’s always known that his time on the show is “an adventure” and not his “final destination”, but the 44-year-old had other plans that drew him to finally hang his “The Late Late Show” hosting hat.
“Look it’s not easy in any way to walk away from something that is so… I mean I’ll never work in a better environment than the one I work in now,” he told the actress, 47. “Nothing about leaving the show was to do with not enjoying it. I love it, but the truth is it became a very easy decision because I always knew it was an adventure and I never ever considered it to be the final destination.”
Much of his reason to step back now has to do with the three children he shares with wife Julia Carey: son Max, 11, and daughters Carey, 8, and Charlotte, 5.
James Corden – Wants To Be Around His Kids When They Still Want To Be Around Him
Speaking on how his children inspired his departure from “The Late Late Show”, he recalled a memorable conversation with one of his kids, which took place a year ago when he was still filming his Amazon Prime series “Mammals”.
“I was filming on a Sunday and I came downstairs, it was about 6 a.m. and my son, who was 10 at the time, was sat on the stairs and he said, ‘Are you working today?’ and I said, ‘I am,'” Corden recalled. “And he said, ‘I thought, well, it’s Sunday,’ and I said, ‘I know, buddy, but this schedule’s just all over the place. We just got to get it done because we only have a tiny amount of time before we have to go back and do the show,’ and his face just kind of dropped.”
This conversation made him aware that, somehow, he was running out of time.
“I got in the car and I called my wife Jules and I said, ‘I’ve realized, best-case scenario we have six more summers where Max is like, even remotely wants to be around us and I cannot waste another one,'” he said.
