Jamie Lee Curtis Says She’ll Be Dead If She Wasn’t Sober

If you’re on your sobriety journey, Jamie Lee Curtis wants you to know that it is worth it, because one day you’re going to look back and realize just how much it changed your life. The Oscar winner celebrated 24 years of sobriety in February, and she’s so much the better and thankful for it.

Jamie Lee Curtis On Why She’s “Incredibly Lucky”

Curtis counts herself among the lucky ones after getting over a painful addiction to opioid and remaining sober ever since.

In the new interview on the Morning Joe – originally taped before the SAG-AFTRA strike began – the actress reflected on her struggling days, saying her “worst day was almost invisible to anyone else.”

“I’m lucky. I didn’t make terrible decisions high or under the influence that then, for the rest of my life, I regret,” she expressed. “There are women in prison whose lives have been shattered by drugs and alcohol, not because they were violent felons, not because they were horrible people, but because they were addicts.”

She added that she counts herself “incredibly lucky” that doing drugs wasn’t her path and she was able to free herself from the harmful lifestyle.

Jamie Lee Curtis – Says Going Sober Was Her Greatest Achievement in Life

The actress, 64, then pointed to the extremity of her addiction at the time, saying, “I was an opiate addict, and I liked a good opiate buzz,” she shared. “And if fentanyl was available, as easily available as it is today on the street, I’d be dead.”

Curtis started her sober journey in 1999, once telling PEOPLE in 2018 that she “was ahead of the curve of the opiate epidemic. I had a 10-year run, stealing, conniving. No one knew. No one.”

The “Everything Everywhere All At Once” star, and a mother to two grown-up daughters with husband Christopher Guest, said her sober journey led her to an incredible life.

Forget the Oscars and being one of the most recognizable faces in Hollywood – to the “Halloween” star, her greatest achievement was finally going sober.

“My sobriety has been the key to freedom, the freedom to be me, to not be looking in the mirror in the reflection and trying to see somebody else,” she said. “I look in the mirror. I see myself. I accept myself. And I move on because you know what? The world is filled with things we need to do.”
