Jane Fonda Shares Different Recollection Of The Slap Scene From Monster-In-Law

The twist however is that Jennifer Lopez didn’t apologize. What?Jane Fonda recently confirmed on the Drew Barrymore Show what Jennifer Lopez formerly told us some time ago; she really was cut close to the eye as a result of the slapping scene in “Monster-in-Law.”

Jane Fonda Calls Jennifer Lopez Out For Not Apologizing to Her After Accidentally Wounding Her During Slap Scene

During Thursday’s chat with Drew Barrymore, Jane Fonda looked back on an iconic 2005 rom-com scene from “Monster-in-Law” that saw her and Jennifer Lopez exchange a few slaps, which, as fun as it sounds, left her with a cut above her eye.

The 85-year-old actress then claimed, “She’s never apologized.”

When host Drew Barrymore fondly referred to the movie, Jane Fonda recalled, “The thing that comes to mind right away is we have a slapping scene. I slap her, she slaps me. … Well Jennifer — as per Jennifer — she had this enormous diamond ring. And so, when she slapped me one of the times, it cut open across my eye, my eyebrow.”

In the film, Fonda played the titular character Viola Fields, who is hellbent on stopping her son from marrying Lopez’s character Charlie Cantilini. The slap scene, interestingly, happens on the wedding day when Fields steps out in a white flowing gown of her own to rival the bride’s, and this leads to an argument that ended in a physical confrontation. At one point, Fonda’s character says: “You don’t go and slap somebody and then apologize, get some backbone.”

Jennifer Lopez – On the Slap Scene And Feeling “Sorry” For Bruising Jane Fonda

In 2019, Jennifer Lopez talked about the incident on a video she posted on her YouTube channel, albeit a bit differently from Jane Fonda’s. She remembered being “mortified” ahead of the shoot, adding, “I was like… so sorry.” Watching the film on an iPad, Lopez decided that the slap scene, even though invoking too many emotions, was “one of the most fun scenes I’ve ever done.”

“She really really went for it, and so did I, and then I punched her in the eye by mistake — right there — ouch,” Lopez said. “We talked about how we were going to do this over and over again. I was so afraid to hit Jane Fonda in the face or hurt her in any way,” the singer and actress said. “She was so brazen and [said] like, ‘Just hit me, don’t worry about it.’ “

Continuing on, she recalled herself saying, “I don’t want to hurt you,” and then “the next thing you know [Fonda] really went for it on one of those slaps.” “The scene took on a life of its own,” she added. “I just remember afterward Jane had a blood blister right at the top of her eye. My nail, like, went up into her eye. … She didn’t care. She’s such a gangster bitch. I just love her.”
