Jason Momoa Ditches Aquaman for “Supergirl”

Jason Momoa Ditches Aquaman for "Supergirl"Jason Mamoa is gearing up to return to our screens as a comic character, and it’s not the one we’ve already grown attached and familiar with. Yup, like very rare actors, Mamoa has managed to snag superhero roles in both DC and Marvel.

The rare other names are Ryan Reynolds and Ben Affleck – Ryan Reynolds for ‘Green Lantern’ and ‘Deadpool’ and Ben Affleck as ‘Dare Devil’ and ‘Batman.’ So here’s what we know about Mamoa’s new role.

Jason Mamoa Calls New Role In ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’ The “Perfect Character”

Jason Mamoa has played a few heroes and villains during his many years in the spotlight, but a foul-mouthed intergalactic bounty hunter, or anti-hero if you’re into that sort of thing, is definitely a new new for him.

Deadline first reported the news of the ‘Aquaman’ star’s casting, with ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’ set to be the second film in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s rebooted DC Universe.

The first, is of course, the hugely anticipated Superman reboot starring David Corenswet as the titular superhero.

House of the Dragon‘s Milly Alcock will play Supergirl, also known as Kara Zor-El, with other cast members including villain Krem of the Yellow Hill and Eve Ridley’s Ruthye Mary Knolle.

Following the casting news, Mamoa took to Instagram to share the good news with fans on December 30. He posted a screenshot where he originally expressed interest in playing the role.

It read: “I collect comics, and I don’t do so much anymore, but was always my favorite, and I always wanted to play Lobo, because I’m like, ‘Hello? It’s the perfect role.’”

It continued, “I mean, listen. If they call and ask me to play him, it’s a f*ck yeah. I haven’t received any call, so I don’t want to put fake news out there, but if they ever call and ask me to play, or ask me to audition, I’m there.” He then captioned the post, “They called.” Gunn commented, “Welcome, my friend.”

All We Know About DC’s Upcoming ‘Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow’

At present, plot for the upcoming live-action adaptation is still under wraps, though script for it has been completed by Ana Nogueira, with Craig Gillespie attached to direct. The movie will start filming this Jan. 13, with an expected June 26, 2026 release date.

Gunn has already teased that the characters we’ll meet in this adaptation is going to be “much more hardcore” than other versions fans have known so far.

“We see the difference between Superman, who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he’s an infant, versus Supergirl, who was raised on a rock chip off of Krypton, and watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life,” Gunn said last year, as per Variety.
