John Stamos Reveals The Real Truth About The Olsen Twins’ Role In “Full House”

Can you believe that Mary-Kate and Ashley almost did not play Michelle on the famous ABC show? Yes, I know. Weird right? Cute little redheads almost stole the role.

The Olsen Twins Almost Did Not Appear In “Full House” As They Cried A Lot

John Stamos has been in Hollywood for over forty years, and even so, it’s easy to see that his most recognizable role was playing Jesse Katsopolis in “Full House.”

Over the years, Stamos has opened up about how he’s formed a close bond with his “Full House” family, but it would take a reunion for him to grow close to the Olsen twins. However, he once tried to get them fired for an unexpected reason.

“The Unauthorized Full House Story” released in January 2015 on Lifetime showed what it must have been like for the cast behind-the-scenes. In the movie, fans saw John Stamos try his best to convince the show’s producers to get the Olsen twins replaced because he felt they were not suited for the role of Michelle Tanner.

While it was easy to think it was an imagined storyline because of the way the actor talked fondly of them over the years, Stamos is now confirming that it actually did happen.

“It’s sort of true that the Olsen twins cried a lot,” he told Entertainment Tonight. “It was very difficult to get the shot. So I [gestured], ‘Get them out … !’ That is actually 100% accurate.”

As faithful fans of the show know, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen played Michelle Tanner throughout the show’s eight season run. After the producers tried replacing them with a different set of twins, they later decided to retain them, even though Stamos didn’t really say why.

“[The producers] brought in a couple of … redheaded kids,” he told the outlet. “We tried that for a while and that didn’t work. [Producers] were like, all right, get the Olsen twins back. And that’s the story.”

Stamos apparently didn’t hold grudges that they weren’t replaced as he had wanted and even has a good relationship with them. They reconnected following Bob Saget’s untimely death in January 2022, where Stamos realized the lovely women they’ve grown up to be.

“[The Full House cast] really hadn’t been in touch with the Olsen twins, which I hadn’t seen in many years,” he said during an Instagram live in June 2022. “They came, and they were loving and so kind. [They] clearly missed us, we clearly missed them.”
