As guitarist Jeff Beck struggled to live, his friend Johnny Depp remained by his bedside. And now the Pirates of the Caribbean actor must move on after Beck’s death. An insider told People that Depp feels heartbroken over the passing of the English guitarist, 78. 

Johnny, 59, feels “totally devastated,” added the source. And the insider described how Depp joined other musicians to support their friend amid his illness. But the relationship between the actor and the English guitarist represented “a really tight friendship,” shared the source. As a result of collaborating on music and rehearsing, Beck and Depp became “extremely close.”

And over the summer, touring brought the two into a tight friendship. But the illness came on “really quickly,” explained the insider. And Beck became progressively more ill in the last few weeks. Jeff’s illness occurred in the wake of Beck’s and Depp’s performance at at the Helsinki Blues Festival. And in another musical collaboration, the singer/actor and the guitarist teamed up onstage in Monaco for songs from their album.

As a result of Beck’s sudden death, Depp feels heartbroken, say insiders. And Johnny hasn’t even begun to process the news that his friend has passed, according to the sources. Beck’s death comes just after their album, titled 18, delighted fans. And the musical duo unveiled a video for This Is a Song for Miss Hedy Lamarr, the first single off the album.

At the time of the album, Depp had reflected on what the musical collaboration meant to him. And he shared, “It’s an extraordinary honor to play and write music with Jeff, one of the true greats.” But beyond that professional bond, Johnny felt a true personal bond. And he called Beck “someone I am now privileged enough to call my brother.”

However, Jeff felt just as strongly. And the guitarist praised, “I haven’t had another creative partner like him for ages. He was a major force on this record. I just hope people will take him seriously as a musician because it’s a hard thing for some people to accept that Johnny Depp can sing rock and roll.” 

Beck’s family released a statement about his death. And they shared that they felt “deep and profound sadness.” Beck had suddenly become ill with bacterial meningitis. And “he peacefully passed away,” added his family in the statement. However, they also asked for privacy to “process this tremendous loss.”
