Johnny Depp and his ex-wife Amber Heard have been going back and forth with each other, suing, denying, He said-She said, and on and on they go, since their divorce in 2017.
Johnny is denying the sexual assault allegations labeled against him by Amber on the first day of his $50 million defamation trial. Johnny, 58, is suing Amber, 35, over a 2018 op-ed she wrote for the Washington Post about surviving domestic violence, although she never mentioned Depp in the article. On Tuesday, April 12, opening statements began for the libel trial, which is expected to last about six weeks, inside the Fairfax County Courthouse in Virginia, with both Johnny and Amber present.
The article reads “Amber Heard: I spoke up against sexual violence—and faced our culture’s wrath. That has to change.” Amber’s attorney Ben Rottenborn explained that Amber didn’t write that headline herself or get to approve it. Ben Rottenborn however said Amber has indeed been the victim of sexual violence by Johnny.
Johnny Depp News – It’s True?
Regarding the headline, “tragically, it’s true,” Rottenborn told the courtroom in Virginia on April 11 during his opening arguments. “Amber did suffer sexual violence at the hands of Depp. … You will hear in the most graphic and horrifying terms about the violence that she suffered. You’ll hear that straight from her. She will get on the stand and she will tell you that. It happened.”
Rottenborn then listed a time when Johnny allegedly had a three-day, alcohol-fueled blackout while in Australia in 2015 toward the end of their marriage, when Johnny “abused and sexually assaulted Amber, all because she had the courage to confront him about his drinking.”
Rottenborn said, “Imagine that: A concerned spouse confronts her husband about his drinking and gets ‘rewarded’ with that.”
A spokesperson for Johnny, denied the allegations, saying the Depp believes it is no coincidence that they are just now coming to light.
On April 11, a spokesperson for Depp said In a statement to PEOPLE, “These fictitious claims were never made at the onset of Amber’s allegations in 2016, and only advantageously surfaced years later once she was sued for defamation after noting in her op-ed that she was a victim of ‘sexual violence.'”
“Words are key in a defamation case and conveniently, this allegation only came after that,” they add. “This follows a pattern of her elaborate, erroneous claims which have continued to change and evolve over time for the purpose of Hollywood shock value of which Amber has mastered and used to exploit a serious social movement.”
Johnny Depp’s – $50 Million Lawsuit
The $50 million lawsuit was originally filed in March 2019, but it was postponed due to the pandemic. The actor accused his former wife of defamation of character. He claimed that the alleged domestic abuse Amber detailed in a Washington Post perspective was all part of an “elaborate hoax.”
The court documents state that “Ms. Heard purported to write from the perspective of ‘a public figure representing domestic abuse’ and claimed that she ‘felt the full force of our culture’s wrath for women who speak out’ when she ‘spoke up against sexual violence’.”
He agrees that she never really mentioned him by name, however, he claimed Amber’s op-ed “depends on the central premise that Ms. Heard was a domestic abuse victim and that Mr. Depp perpetrated domestic violence against her.”
Moreover, Depp’s lawsuit against Amber alleges that it was not him who committed acts of domestic violence, but Amber. “Ms. Heard violently abused Mr. Depp, just as she was caught and arrested for violently abusing her former domestic partner,” the court documents read.

The lawsuit claims that Amber’s alleged decision to fabricate claims of domestic abuse resulted in numerous opportunities that wouldn’t have been possible earlier. “Ms. Heard also knew that her elaborate hoax worked: as a result of her false allegations against Mr. Depp, Ms. Heard became a darling of the #MeToo movement, was the first actress named a Human Rights Champion of the United Nations Human Rights Office, was appointed ambassador on women’s rights at the American Civil Liberties Union, and was hired by L’Oreal Paris as its global spokesperson,” the lawsuit alleges.
As a result of Amber’s action, Johnny Depp’s career was allegedly faced with losses. Johnny claimed that days after Amber published her piece in the Washington Post he was dropped from his role on Pirates of the Caribbean. Because of the alleged damage to his career, Depp is suing Heard for defamation and asking for damages in excess of $50,000,000.
Did Amber Heard Manufacture False Allegations To Boost Her Career?
Depp’s legal team went first in opening statements, claiming that Heard manufactured the “false allegations” to boost her career in light of the #MeToo movement at the time. Johnny’s lawyer Camille Vasquez argued that Heard added sexual assault to a list of allegations because she “panicked” when she realized the “seriousness of what she’d alleged” and couldn’t back down from her notoriety as a survivor. Vasquez added that Heard’s lawyers would be sharing “explosive” stories “designed” to “distract” from “common sense.”
On Saturday, April 9, Amber took to Instagram to write that she will be avoiding social media until after the trial and thanked her followers for their support. She added, “Hopefully when this case concludes, I can move on and so can Johnny. I have always maintained a love for Johnny and it brings me great pain to have to live out the details of our past life together in front of the world. At this time, I recognize the ongoing support I’ve been fortunate to receive throughout these years, and in these coming weeks I will be leaning on it more than ever.”
