Pirates of the Caribbean star Johnny Depp is reeling in support from social media users over Amber Heard defamation suit. Johnny Depp returned to court on Monday, May 23 in the defamation trial between him and ex-wife Amber Heard. Sociologist Nicole Bedera told NPR Weekend Edition Sunday that social media is leaning towards supporting Depp over Aquaman star Amber Heard. Continue reading and we’ll give you the low down.
Johnny Depp – Why Social Media Is Sympathizing with Depp
Social media does appear to be siding with the Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas star. While the 3 Days to Kill star has garnered 8.2 million views for the hashtag #IStandWithAmberHeard, a Hashtag for Depp, #JusticeForJohnnyDepp has received a whopping 15 billion views.
It’s not difficult to see why people would wonder over such a huge disparity and Bedera explained that “there are a lot of reasons for that.” She explained that, in the defamation case originally filed by Depp, “Johnny Depp gets to go first.
And so, his side of the story has been told in full. And a lot of people made up their minds after week one of the case or day three of the case.” However, there could be another reason Depp is fairing so well on social media.”
Johnny Depp – Could Johnny Depp be Getting Organized Support From Antifeminist Groups?
Bedera went on to explain that there was another possible reason for Depp’s disparate level of social media support. “We often see that men’s rights groups and other anti-feminist groups are better organized,” she said, adding, “we know that men’s rights activist forums, for example, have been following the Heard case pretty carefully.”
It is, however, worth noting that it could be that Depp is simply a bigger star and has been well-liked for decades blending into two generations of fans. Bedera touched on that point too, saying that “we all thing sexual violence is wrong until the perpetrator is someone we know and like,” adding that “you don’t want to feel like you’re a bad person if you continue to like Pirates of The Caribbean.”
Johnny Depp – Why Men’s Groups May Be Inspired To Act On Jonny Depp’s Behalf
Depp, of course, accused Amber Heard of domestic violence in his suit and, per MPR, it could be the catalyst that is driving support for the Rum Diaries star. Bedera went on the claim that what Depp is doing is “very common in cases like this,” and that Depp was not denying violence but was, instead, blaming Heard for driving him to it.
Continue to watch the trial or you’ll miss something. It will be interesting to see how this turns out for both actors. Return here often for more spoilers, news, and updates.
