Katy Perry Responds To Commentary About Her Decision To Work With Producer Dr. Luke

Singer Katy Perry has addressed her decision to continue working with Dr. Luke on her upcoming album ‘143’ – after Kesha accused him of sexual abuse.

In a discussion on the September 4th episode of Call Her Daddy With Alex Cooper podcast, Perry, 39, had expressed, “I understand that it started a lot of conversations, and he was one of many collaborators that I worked with.”

However, she emphasized that the core of the music is her own creation: “The truth is, I wrote these songs from my experience of my whole life, going through this metamorphosis, and he was one of the people to help facilitate all that — one of the writers, one of the producers.”

Dr. Luke’s History With Katy Perry

Dr Luke, whose real name is Lukasz Gottwald, has a long history with Perry too, producing her breakout hit ‘I Kissed a Girl’ in 2008, as well as her recent ‘Woman’s World’ single.

Perry has worked with producer Dr. Luke dating back to her ‘Teenage Dream’ era hits like “Firework” and “Teenage Dream” co-produced by him. And, despite a highly publicized feud, she seems to believe in the songs produced for her new album.

Perry’s decision to work with Dr Luke on several tracks for ‘143’, a decision that alienated some fans and music critics.

Dr. Luke’s Lawsuit Against Kesha

Dr. Luke’s lawsuit against Kesha, filed in 2014, accused him of drugging and molesting her in 2005. Although he was not charged with criminal offenses and denied Kesha’s allegations.

In 2016 a New York judge dismissed the case, and the following year the producer filed a defamation lawsuit against Kesha. The settlement of the latter case in 2023 was noted with amicability by both parties.

In their respective statements following the settlement, Dr. Luke reiterated his innocence, saying, “I never drugged or assaulted her and would never do that to anyone.”

Kesha also commented, “Only God knows what happened that night, as I have always said. I cannot recount everything that happened. I am looking forward to closing the door on this chapter of my life and beginning a new one.”

There have also been controversies surrounding her 143 singles, ‘Woman’s World’ and ‘Lifetimes’.

The music video shoot for ‘Lifetimes’ required permits and got Spanish authorities involved. Perry’s label clarified that they had taken all the right measures, but a permit was still pending during the shoot day.

On the podcast, Perry also talked about how ‘Woman’s World’ is ‘very much about a kind of glorification of feminism and womanhood. Especially womanhood, especially as a mother.

“I am speaking from my own experience,” she said. “When I speak about ‘Woman’s World,’ I speak about feeling so empowered now as a mother, as a woman, giving birth creating life, creating another set of organs, a brain, a heart. I created a whole a– heart and I did it. I’m still doing it. And I’m still a matriarch. And feeling really grounded in that, that’s where I’m speaking from.”

She continued: “I created all of this with several different collaborators, people that I’ve collaborated with from the past, from the ‘Teenage Dream’ era — all of that.”

Perry Speaks On Reason For Releasing New Music

Despite the external pressures and criticisms, Perry says ‘joy’ encourages her to release new music. “I don’t feel like I have to make music,” she said. “I don’t feel like I have to prove anything. I’m doing it now from a place of celebration and love.”

Even as Perry readies the release of 143 on 20 September, it’s clear that the music is a representation of her transformation as an artist and mother that reflects the person she has become through evolutions, collaborations, and the continuation of her career.
