Katy Perry Says She Feels “Old” Hearing Young Artists Reference Her Songs

Katy Perry Katy Perry is thrilled that her records are still making a big impact in people’s lives several years after they’re released. But she also admitted that there’s a downside to the attention being paid to her music by younger artists, especially regarding how that makes her feel about herself.

Katy Perry Responds To Olivia Rodrigo’s Lyrics Asking About Her “Teenage Dream”

On Friday, Katy Perry sat down with Out Magazine to discuss her highly anticipated Las Vegas residency titled “PLAY”. She also shared how it feels to have lyrics from her hit songs make a comeback in music by younger artists.

After interviewer Taylor Henderson told the singer that “a new generation of artists is inspired by her work,” Perry, 37, replied that it makes her feel “old” to see her lyrics being used in new songs.

The most popular comebacks have been Olivia Rodrigo singing “Where’s my f**ing teenage dream” in “Brutal” and Fletcher sampling “I Kissed a Girl” on “girls girls girls.”

“Old,” Perry said with a laugh. “Honestly, old! And grateful that I survived it and grateful I’m not dead in a ditch somewhere. Wow, it’s coming all the way back around.”

“Things are nostalgic? What?” she continued jokingly. “It feels like yesterday, especially when people are like, ‘Oh my gosh I used to listen to you when I was a kid’ and they’re like full-on adults with kids.”

Perry, however, admits that the process of her songs finding new life in music by the younger generation is “awesome”.

“It means that the music is still resonating. It means that the message still rings true for people,” she said. “It’s fun! It’s wonderful to have that stamp.”

My co-creators and collaborators and the dancers and the band, everybody’s just like, ‘This is the kookiest idea,’ “the “Dark Horse” singer told Out Magazine.

“PLAY” will debut on Dec. 29 and end in March. It will be taking place at the theater at Resorts World Las Vegas. The residency is set to include exclusive New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day performances.
