Keanu Reeves Performs Live For the First Time In 20 Years

Keanu Reeves stepped back onstage with his band Dogstar for the first time in 20 years and it was like he never left. How many people could have guessed that Reeves is not only good at wielding guns, or knives, or basically any weapon, in blockbuster movies like “John Wick” and “The Matrix,” but that he’s also a rockstar?

Keanu Reeves can shred a guitar, still. Ahead of his buzz-worthy first performance, his bandmate Robert Mailhouse gave him a much-needed advice on how to brace performing in front of a live crowd, especially since he’s spent so many years away.

“He was just super positive. He was like, ‘Listen to the music. Just be present in the song, and it will go from there,’” Reeves told the San Francisco Chronicle

After meeting Mailhouse at a supermarket and bonding over their shared passions, the two started the rock band Dogstar in 1991, with Reeves serving as the band’s bassist and backup vocalist while Mailhouse is a drummer and percussionist.

A year later, Gregg Miller would go on to join the band as a lead guitarist and vocalist, leaving three years later. Bret Domrose, who took over as the lead vocalist when Miller left, joined the band in 1994 as a backup guitarist and vocalist.

In another interview, Reeves revealed that he misses being able to create and perform music with his band.

“I missed playing together, I missed writing together, I missed doing shows together. It’s something I’ve always missed,” Reeves told Billboard. “We came to a spot where we weren’t playing anymore, and I missed it … Once we started to play, and it felt good, and really positive and creative, that’s when it was like, ‘Okay, let’s make this happen.’”

Reeves also announced that he’s working on a new album with Dogstar, saying, “I think all three of us just said, ‘Well, if we’re going to do this, let’s make a record.’”
