After critics ate ‘Horizon’ up and spit it out following its Cannes premiere, a source has revealed that Kevin Costner has turned his hopes towards ‘Yellowstone’ fans making the show a big success.
Kevin Costner – Doesn’t Think ‘Horizon’ Is A Failure Yet Despite Poor Reviews From Multiple Critics
After spending over two hours watching the first part of ‘Horizon,’ critics rarely had good things to say about the Western drama exploring the westward US expansion and the conflicts that arose as a result.
The Hollywood Reporter called it a “clumsy slog” with “messy plot threads.” IndieWire declared it to be the “dullest cinematic vanity project of the century.” For Vanity Fair, it was the “biggest American boondoggle at this year’s Cannes,” whilst others wrote it off as “a chore to sit through.”
While this is disappointing for a project Costner sunk $30 million of his own money in, sources close to him say he is far from completely despairing.
If you ask Costner, he’ll likely tell you the dismal reviews are as a result of certain sections of Hollywood ganging up against him to destroy his four-part epic movie in the eyes of the audience.
Produced by, directed by and starring the Oscar winner, the first part of ‘Horizon’ premiered at the 77th Cannes Film Festival on May 19 ahead of its theater debut on June 28.
However, after critics panned the movie, there are speculations it will have a dismal opening weekend.
“Kevin is still holding out hope that the final arbiter of HAASP1 will be the millions of fans who have fueled Yellowstone’s success over the last five years and made that show, for a time, the biggest thing on television,” an insider exclusively tells Life & Style.
“Kevin was warned by marketing execs that he could get hit in the press over this film, and that has now happened,” the source said. “The critical beatdown he took in Cannes stings, it stings a lot, but Kevin has defied the odds before and he’s even made massive hits out of movies critics didn’t entirely get at first, most notably 1992’s The Bodyguard.”
Kevin Costner – Is Not Happy Hollywood Doesn’t Appreciate All He’s Done For It Throughout His Successful Career
The fact that Hollywood doesn’t want to back Costner on his latest Western venture, despite knowing it took decades for the 69-year-old to see it through, is said to be irritating the star.
“What’s more irritating to Kevin is that he really doesn’t feel like he has the film industry behind him on this big swing, and he encounters naysayers at every turn,” said the source. “It’s supremely annoying to him after all he’s done for Hollywood and especially for the Western genre.”
